Controlling DMX device with a MIDI device?

Post by turiel »

Is this possible with Resolume Arena? I got a USB midi device (Akai MPK) and I want to control LED lights with its keys. Arena allows to map DMX and MIDI input/output to almost anything on the GUI, but I'm not sure if I can map midi in to a dmx out. Is that possible? And how?

Thanks. Uh, I checked the thread and readme but I'm still not sure what the program does. Can you explain in a nutshell? So far I undertsand that it overwrites default MIDI and DMX shortcuts. is that right?

you would map your midi buttons/faders to the channel sliders, then map the gray rectangles to Luminance channel fixtures in advanced output.
Midi to grayscale to Dmx.

I don't want to take away from Ravensc's deliciously genious workaround, I think it may be a bit overkill for OP's needs.

I think you may be expecting that Resolume somehow translates Midi to DMX, and you would use that to control your LED fixtures. That's not the case.

Resolume is video software, so it translates pixels to DMX. So in order to turn an RGB fixture to red, you would need to play a video with red in it and tell the fixture to follow its color ( you can read all about how to do that here: https://resolume.com/manual/en/r5/dmx_output ).

So in order to change colors via midi, you would have different colored clips that you can trigger via midi, and the fixture follows this.

Maybe I'm thoroughly misunderstanding what you want. In that case, could you please elaborate what 'I want to control LED lights' means to you?

Moving heads, flame machines: dMX devices which have only few DMX channels. Those kind of stuff.

If you understood "LED walls" by me using the term "LED light" for a moving head with leds as light source then sorry for the confusion.
I'm going to do the rest of the show (mapping) in Resolume so I hoped I could control these DMX devices with it as well. Since I have a midi USB controller (AKAI MPK) and didn't see a way to map PC keyboard keys to DMX channels anyway I thought I could use it.
