Touch Sensor + Painting + Resolume = Awesome!

Post by georgeberlin »

So, I mixed up some conductive paint,
made a few fun paintings, then hooked
it up to a MaKey Makey (turns touch into
a keypress through conductivity) and
then set the keys to trigger animations
lined up to the art in Resolume.

phpBB [video]

Get MaKey MaKey here: http://www.makeymakey.com

The paint is just 50/50 graphite powder and
budget acrylic paint.

There's also some fun audio-reactive visuals
controlled by drums and sculpture/junk/instruments
by way of Magic Music Visuals. People REALLY loved
driving the visuals with drumming, gongs, etc.

It's a great program and super versatile!
Get that here: http://magicmusicvisuals.com

So yeah, any questions I'm happy to help!

Next, I want to have sensors that trigger
animations all over the room, so they hit
one and it sends them to the next like a
scavenger hunt!

Wow, George... great work!
I am looking after to have some interactivity like that with Arena for a while now.
Makeymakey seems simple and fantastic.
How difficult it was to set it up tp work with Arena?
Doesn´t people have to be grounded during usage?

thanks

Paulo

Paulo,

Thanks, it was a lot of fun to share with people.

Once I have the MaKey MaKey running on its own, it's just a matter of using the keyboard mapping by tapping it while on the right clip. Very easy!

A few tips:

I remapped all the keys, so I can have more inputs. Normally, there's 6 keys, then arrow keys, space, mouse movements, and click. This takes a little scripting and other things with Arduino. There's a link on Sparkofun website (they sell Makeys) about this. It can be a little tricky so look it up.

DON'T map the keys to QWERTY! I found this out the hard way... It will trigger setting video cue points while your videos are playing. I kept getting video that reset to starting at the end because someone was touching a spot tht triggered Q, etc.

:-( so they weren't viewable.

And yes, I have a spot on the wall people had to touch to ground themselves near the paintings.

Here's the key remapping tutorial I mentioned:

VERY helpful. There's a weird trick to install the board on Windows 8 due to an unsigned driver if you want to edit the keys. That's on their forum someplace.
