Using OSX? Using 10.8.5? Get rid of it and downgrade to an old timemachine backup with 10.8.4. I had a similar issue a week last Friday, fps dorpping to 9fps. 10.8.4 fixed it. That and clearing PRAM and SMC.

One concern for the next release of OSX Mavericks though is this CPU idle feature when a window is out of focus. Hopefully this can be switched on and off via a control panel or a software feature! I'd hate to lose framerate just because my VJ software isnt actually clicked on!
