Smooth playback - new topic

As suggested by Joris here`s a new thread on smooth playback because the problem is a bad one and makes Resolume untenable for certain gigs that require even simple scrolls. Ok I understand the potential problem with processing - this obviously not that, as the cpu is hardly dented and it happens on a single layer even down to 640 sized compositions. I understand there is a potential problem with FPS and monitor projector frequencies, but even with everything set to 60KHZ and a 60FPS DXV encoded video it still occurs. The glitch seems to be every four or five seconds, just as Joris suggests as if the maths need to occasionally catch up and resync. Presumeably this relates to a buffer size before it does this. He also suggests that a math mismatch might give two frames 2kz and the third 3khz, but the glitch I see is bigger and more infrequent. I don`t know if this is a truly a Resolume problem or a Quicktime problem or a general problem, but whatever, it means that despite all the wonderful tricks and layers and effects and magic, to scroll a nice simple graphic or logo across the screen looks very unpro indeed. The show i`m working on at the moment has a lot of this. A lot of animation from pictures, maps, text, cutouts. I`m having to seriously look at other ways to do this show because i can`t do a simple smooth scroll of a graphic across the screen.
It would be great to know what you guys are thinking about it all, as you are obviously aware of the problem from the previous and by the end, well jumbled thread. Is this what you would get from spending 8K on a Hippo Laptop - smooth scrolling! Resolume can do all the rest, mapping and all, but it`s a killer not being able to do smooth scrolls ------------------ any illumination would be gratefully received, showtime very soon! JM

Thank you for making a new post about this.

Could you perhaps post a small recording of your output? That way everyone has a better idea of what you're talking about. Just a recording with your phone should do fine.

So, to state our current position on this:

We are very much aware of this issue, and of the need for consistent smooth playback in a commercial production environment.

We are trying to solve it, and have implemented a variety of solutions. So far, none of them have been 100% successful in fixing it.

I absolutely love what Resolume has to offer - really dig it the concept of the software.
Unfortunately I refuse to use it because of regular glitches to playback.

I have very beefy PCs, all SSD and RevoDrive (which is really fast!), NVidia video cards (very recent models).

I have tried DVX codec, uncompressed video (because Revo eats it up - no problem), and every trick of buffer size, matching sync, etc, etc.

Every few minutes (far less than 10 minute intervals) I see a playback glitch.
The glitch makes me very sad and customers pissed off.

As a result I tell my freinds/colleagues to stay away from Resolume until it can offer this most fundamental function - stable playback.

This unstable playback does not affect GrandVJ or Modul8 - which are of similar price - less $$$ even!

For me, until this issue is Resolved - I would not use Resolume even if it was free... :<

I am still hopeful.

Same problem here!!! Switched over to vvvv until the problem is solved... Hopefully soon!

Strange that even the playback progress bar jumps, when the video stutters. Anybody noticed the same?

Harddrives are also SSD and clips play fine with quicktime.

DBassix, the way your post is worded makes it sound like this is a recent thing.

However, the problem that we're aware of (and what the original topic is about) has always been problematic, since Res 3 even. It would be extremely helpful if people could post videos of their issues, so we can clearly see what the problem is.

Otherwise this thread will derail again in no time, smooth playback is too wide a definition.

+1 for us as well...smooth capability is horrible. I've posted about this in the past as well. Here's a youtube video of our gig showing cartoon like jittery playback of footage purchased from Resolume's online footage shop:

and we are using an HP z800 with 192GB of RAM and NVIDIA Qadro 4000 for GFX...basically one the fastest machines money can buy! Tried a MacPro as well with same results. Something is very wrong deep within the software.
