Does encoding with DVX produce massive files?

Post by macheteperezz »

Hello!

I'm new to Resolume. I'm just getting my head around the system and particularly trying to set all my media to the DVX settings recommended on the manual in preparation of my first A/V show.

My questions are:

1. Does encoding with DVX result in much larger files with much larger bit rates than the original?
2. Is there a way of reducing file size and bit rate when encoding to DVX?
3. Is the following comparison normal?

Original file (pre-DVX): dimension 1280 × 720; codec MPEG-2 Video, Linear PCM; bit rate 19,837; size 112.9 MB

Converted file (DVX): dimension 1280x720; codec DXDI; bit rate 71,086; size 404.5 MB

I've used MPEG Streamclip, with the settings recommended through the Resolume manual.

Many thanks for any advice you can give me!

MP

Dxv will be bigger than mpeg, because mpeg is super compressed

It's still way smaller than 440 or 442

So the answers are as follows;

1. Depends on how the original was encoded
2. Sure but you'll have crappy looking video
3. Yes, see above

If you want to know what your file size is *really* like compared to dxv, save it in an uncompressed format first. Video requires enormous amounts of hard drive space.

seems normal, you can check to ignore the alpha layer.... footage with alpha layer needs more space ;)

Thanks for the reality check! the DVX files are larger than my uncompressed format which is why I was a bit concerned.
But if that's just the way it is then I can work with it.

And also thanks HerrNieDa for the tip on Alpha channels!

Now to work/play!

shouldnt be bigger than uncompressed, as dxv applies compression

Mpeg2 is not uncompressed...very few formats are actually

if you do a 1:1 render with something like after effects or premiere pro, you can definitely crush it, but I wouldn't suggest it...

if you're using some kind of batch conversion program to dump your content into DXV, not that I've seen
