I must solve this stuttering problem once and for all

Post by steve33 »

Whatever i do, i cannot make my system to run 100% perfect smooth videos and i do not know why!
my system:
cpu- i7-4930K 3.7Ghz
RAM- 16GB DDR3 Quad Channel
GPU- Geforce GTX770 (Latest drivers)
HDD- Samsung SSD 840
Windows 7
Resolume avenue (latest)

* all files converted to DXV3 high quality no alpha
* nothing in my system is overloading including CPU, GPU, and HDD (see attached image)
* i get 35-40 FPS in the benchmark with all layers on! (see attached image)
So where is my Bottleneck??
and why cant i get a smooth playback?
a
I really like this software but in big productions i look like ameture.
Please help me solve this once for all.

Hi Steve,
first of all...you will not manage to reach 100% smoothness for now. The Resolume guys know that...and they are still working on it.It is an issue on software not on hardware side. But its possible to reach 95% with Resolume 4.2 ....they made a huge smoothness jump with 4.2

Here I described a trick to get clips start smoother from the beginning:
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=11966

Here is a smoothness issue thread from before 4.2:
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=10089

And here a little guide to max out the smoothness... but I am pretty sure you know all points already:

- PC Energy settings to "High Performance"

- Use a SSD to store your show related clips

- If you have 30 or 60 fps clips >> use a 60 Hz monitor/projector/led output.

- If you have 25 or 50 fps clips >> use a 50 Hz monitor/projector/led output.

- Play your clips in "timeline" mode

- Never use muxed Audio/Video clips. If you need audio place it separated under your video clip and trigger the column.

- If you don't need audio try to use the trick I described here: KLICK!

- If you need to use the BPM playback mode. You will not be able to reach a acceptable smooth playback for obvious reasons. But to max. it out you can try to tweak the smoothness with the audio buffer size in the preferences in most cases 44100 + 64 buffer should give you the best result. BUT...only in shows with no Audio - Otherwise your sound will crackle and buzzz with a buffer of 64.

- To test your smoothness use a self-made 50 or 60 fps DXV 2/3 looped test clip. Ideally it should contain horizontal and vertical moving white bars.

From my point of view...this is all you can do for now.

Best regards

Resolume is on the market for many years with 10000's of users, dont you think its about time fix this basic but crucial issue?
95% is my dream! and i will be glad to have it.
Here I described a trick to get clips start smoother from the beginning:
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=11966
for some reason i cannot see any difference between 0 and 1000 in latency. everything stays the same.
clips are starting immediately
Here is a smoothness issue thread from before 4.2:
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=10089
read all this thread, nothing that i do not know of.
And here a little guide to max out the smoothness... but I am pretty sure you know all points already:

- PC Energy settings to "High Performance"
already there

already there as mentioned
- If you have 30 or 60 fps clips >> use a 60 Hz monitor/projector/led output.

- If you have 25 or 50 fps clips >> use a 50 Hz monitor/projector/led output.
yes, all files are 25P and monitor is 50P
- Play your clips in "timeline" mode
already there
- Never use muxed Audio/Video clips. If you need audio place it separated under your video clip and trigger the column.
no audio at all
- If you don't need audio try to use the trick I described here: KLICK!
its the same thread as the first. the offset thing that has no effect for me.
- If you need to use the BPM playback mode. You will not be able to reach a acceptable smooth playback for obvious reasons. i don't use BPM

It is very sad, mainly because there is no "beware of stuttering video with no solution!" at purchase page.

Do you have stutters in the GUI output preview too?
Stuttering depends on your hardware too, on my dell laptop I have light stutters, on my macbook pro I have 99,9 no stutters.
I use VGA to composite (PAL) converters thru a TH2Go a lot, and I can set the frame rate of the TH to 50 Hz with the macbook and switchRes, but not on the Dell with windows.

The stuttering is exactly the same in the gui.
so please tell me whats wrong with my hardware and i will be happy to replace it.
the only thing i can think of that's is better in your mac book is the quicktime engine that is awful in windows.

Hey Steve33, I personally use Arena 4 on a lot of complex productions and most of the time I've experienced some kind of stuttering, it was something downstream from the GPU not software.

You've described most of your setup but you haven't included what downstream from your GPU so it's hard to know where the stuttering comes from. What's your complete setup including adapters, processors, length of cables, amps, etc...?

Hey Steve...now I would like to see your un-smooth playback. Can you capture your output monitor with a camera which is able to record with 50fps?

And here you have a DXV3 1080p 50fps testclip

Hi Steve thanks for the clips...can you upload the original files from the camera you used?
Can you use wetransfer.com or dropbox? The quality is very crappy via google ...and who knows how they reconvert uploaded stuff really!? If your recording was already that crappy....do you have another cam? :)

+ ...is this the testclip I gave you? or another one?....If it is your own testclip...may I have it too?

+ can you please post a screenshot containing ALL processes of your "processes-tab" from your Windows task-manager while Resolume is running?
