How to 'Solo' ignore 'Bypass' buttons

Post by Kadete »

Hellooo everyone! :D

There's any way to layer option 'solo' ignore 'bypass' when active?

I'm using an apc40, but i don't like bomes(tryed, but it's too hard to program and it slows resolume response) so i'm using direct deck/layer mapping

We've had some internal discussion on whether a bypassed layer should be automatically 'unbypassed' when 'solo'd'. In the end, we decided against it, because there's no way to know whether it's intentional or not. It could be that you actually want to bypass a solo'd layer, and this would no longer be possible if we 'unbypass' it for you auto-magically.

It's one of those things where we're treading the line between instrument and software. Resolume is an instrument for live performances, like a guitar is too. And a guitar doesn't prevent you from striking a false chord.

But Resolume is also software, and in theory we could prevent you from playing a chord like that. In practice, there's no telling whether you intentionally wanted to play a false chord or not. Sometimes a dissonant chord can actually add a lot to a musical piece.

So in the end, it's a matter of learning not to solo a bypassed layer, similar to how you generally don't play a false chord on a guitar.

@Joris
The guitar as also design to play with hands... but there's all sort of people that can play it with the feet.

I use the bypass so i can check the preview selected video, do the layer effects changes and then on the right moment i like to trigger on in a explosion or breakdown with one button instead of one or two depending on the situation -> that can leave me to unwanted black out....

Please, Please add to settings that auto-magically option for the users that want this behaviour.

Regards :)

The ability to play a guitar with your feet is a horrible analogy, you're not changing the function of the guitar. You're asking for an E string to sometimes to be G string while hitting B string at the same time. Gibson or Fender would look at you funny for asking for something like that.

How would the software be able to tell if you are Soloing a Bypass, or Bypassing a Solo?

I can see changes made with layer effects fine in the preview section with the layer fader down. Sounds like you're over complicating things to me.

I use the Launch Control XL, faders are the layer faders, button under it control the Bypass keys, button under that are the layer select. Sometimes I use these in Standard mode (on/off), other times I use them in Piano mode (makes it more like a lighting console). Unless you have only 2 fingers, I imagine using something like this with buttons operating in standard mode you could hit 3 or 4 at once (or you could use your feet).

Or you could always program a button in OSC that will unclick the Bypass and click the Solo for you, all at the same time .....

I'm not saying to change for everyone, just to add a option for the ones that want a small difference from the current one, the user can know / change the behaviour on settings panel, like:
Layer Options:
[x] - disable bypass when solo is active

Makes no sence to solo a bypass, since there's already a button/functionality to blackout... but maybe i'm not seeing what you see and you could maintain the behaviour you currently have

I'm not overcomplicating ...i'm trying to simplify my work since i have only one hand for vj and another for lj (and just one brain for both)

This is actually a common feature of DAWs, which I use often there.

bypassing a soloed layer would certainly have both buttons enabled, but it could be possible to have the layer state remembered, so for example is a bypassed layer is soloed, the bypass button could turn orange (and flashing), indicating that the bypass is ignored, and the other way around when a soloed layer is bypassed, then the solo button could become orange(and flashing), indicating that the solo is ignored.
Additionally there could be added 2 more buttons next to the composition controls above the layers:
1. layer solo clear. edit: for this to make sense multi-layer solo could be implemented.
2. layer bypass clear.
maybe in the next major version ? ;)
