Arena crashes...

Post by karamasov »

Windows 8.1 64bit, 32GB RAM, Xeon 3.50 GHz, Arena 5.0.1 (updating to .0.2 as we speak)
7 layers of 1920, with one 6000x3000 video in each layer, DXV3
Outputs 2x 2560x1440 to 2x Datapath x4
Mesh warping 4x4 on all 7 slices in output.
LOW MEMORY warning
Crashes (...has stopped working)

New to windows, no idea whats up..

so you are playing 6000x3000 clips in a 1920x1080 composition?

Thats correct. I was adviced by Resolume support staff to avoid large canvases, and rather pipe things with layers to different slices

I'm not sure in what context you got this advice, but loading a 6000x3000 clip 7 times in a 1920x1080 comp is less efficient than loading a single clip of 6000x3000 once in a 6000x3000 comp. If your content is 6000x3000, the texture that has to be processed is also still 6000x3000, so you're not avoiding large canvases this way.

There was a thread recently where Oaktown actually benchmarked the different approaches: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=13095

I wouldn't be surprised if using a single clip also solves your low memory crashes.

Thanks for the feedback,
I tried making a new comp w. one layer 6000x3000 and slice stuff up that way.
Same problem with low memory warning.
File is encoded to DXV3 on a mac, btw.

No fx, disabled global rendering. Fps @ 59/60 steady

Hmmm. I just tried to recreate your setup, and when I load a single 6000x3000 file, in a 6000x3000 comp, and create two Virtual Screens at 2560x1440 each, my memory usage is 1.8GB. It's high, but you're pushing a lot of pixels around.

What's your memory usage with this setup?

I´ll have a look at the system tomorrow, and look at memory usage. Thanks for testing!

Changed the comp and content to 2400x4800 (vertical), with the same (advanced) output at two times 2560x1440.
4 slices to each screen, but Arena starts warning me as soon as I move mesh points back and forth. If I´m too fast with my fingers, i.e. rapid arrow keyboard action, Arena.exe stops working and has to be shut down.

Also, if I hit Cntrl-Shift-A to bring up advanced output, it can crash - If I´m impatient and touch something while advanced output loads.

Memory usage is 2500 MB, CPU usage 2,3%.

Can you send us your advanced output .xml file at mail@resolume.com, please?
