DMX Output > switching Overheadprojectors on/off?

Post by ADD_Visuals »

Hey,

short question..

Is it possible to use the resolume DMX output to send a dmx signal to a switchpack to turn overheadprojectors on or off?

So no brightness or RGB channels etc.. just a power signal..?

thnx!

cutting the power to a projector is not a good idea, but it can be done.
You risk melting the parts inside the projector, and also it will shorten the lamp life.

if you really want to do this you can create a fixture with a luminance channel, and feed it black input for 0 and 100% white for 255 output value.

A far better way to blank out a projector is to buy one with hardware shutter integrated, buy a shutter separately, or build a shutter yourself.

If you have the time and budget... Get a DMX to RS232 converter and send the shutdown command that way.
There's also usb to RS232 (via Ethernet) that might be cheaper, just requires a separate app to run the commands.

Seconding this. It's a very bad idea to routinely shut a projector off and on throughout a show.

That's why they make shutters, isn't it? Most new professional projectors have built in shutters that can be controlled via Artnet, RS232 or Web Control.

If the projectors doesn't have one, they make small shutter units that are DMX controllable.

For someone on a budget, tie-line, black wrap and a little bit of ingenuity goes a long ways ;)

Haha, so funny. I think you've all kinda misread the original post. :D
He was talking about overhead projectors. Most certainly using a tungsten/halogen bulb.

I think you can easily do this by creating two layers, one for each overhead/channel. Then create solids with a certain size somewhere in the comp (make two squares of 30x30px one left one right, does not matter).

Then, turn ON the bypass switch of those layers. So these squares won't end up in your final comp.

NEXT UP, you go to the Advanced output window and make two fixtures, just a simple 1-channel intensity fixture.
You can set the 'input' of this fixture to a single layer. Pick the layers you've just created. Just lay the fixture over these white squares and you're good to go, right?

Good luck!
