Effects parameters assigned to timeline not working

I have several effects parameters assigned to "timeline" and they don't start animating on opening the comp unless I re-select them manually. Is this a bug? Solutions?

where are the effects, clip layer or composition?

I think layer automations are only working when a clip is played in the layer.
would make sense as non playing layers are not rendered.

You could use a solid color clip set to to full alpha.

It happens even after triggering a clip on the layer but as I said it resolved itself so it must have been a weird bug.
