Media manager deleting files

Post by Grimm90 »

Sooo here i am, collecting my media all night long for this massive comp..

By midday i really have to get going, and the collecting is still at 50%, which goes really slow compared to explorer or freefile sync.

So i'm like, allright , i want to stop collecting & take whatever is collected already, so i press cancel (what else..) , thinking it will abort the collecting but leave the footage folder already collected.

I close Resolume , the footage folder which contained 250gig already , is instant empty :(
There goes all night collecting..
It makes sense in some way, because i cancelled the task but there is no other option.

I do got my library synced on a external hdd which is gonna bail me out today, but for a future version i wish that media manager would leave the folder already collected.

I could still decide to delete the partly completed footage folder in explorer or resolume could do it on request, or i keep & use the folder, in my case to divide the load on my hard drive (only 250 gig of free space left on my m2 ssd so would have split the footag folder anyway)

I've tried to collect now 45 GB of footage to an USB HDD, (an old something I found),
Blackmagic disk speed test says it can write at 40MBytes/sec, and Resolume can sustain around that write speed to it. Of course HDDs slow down as you get farther from the platter edge, so this is the best it can do.

250GB over an assumed 10 hours sounds about 200MBit/sec.
Were you collecting the files form a network drive?
Over Wifi?

Nope was collecting from internal sata hdd to another sata hdd.
I'll use blackmagic disk speed test next collect to see what it says.

I also just ordered a T5 samsung SSD to see how that compares (and hopefully save me time).
It's like the larger the composition , the slower it gets.

But the time thing isn't really my issue here, you can try to plan ahead.
I just wish it wouldn't delete the already collected media when i press cancel.

Also side question.

How does big comps slow down resolume ?
I have now been working at this master composition with all my decks & content & fx stacks to copy what i need from that , into the new / current show comp.

It's a 600 gig collect folder, but it is sooo slow.
To open & close it can take a couple of minutes , thats ok i get that.
Switching decks / adding or deleting columns becomes really a patience game.
And at some point on my modest computers everything gets very laggish and slow responsive, like context menus, drag actions..

We always talk FPS , but what's the best way to improve overal performance & speed of Resolume ? Is all of this eating too much ram ? Faster speed processors ? MOAR CORES ?

USB2 or 3 External drive?

Unless you upgrade also the internal SSD, I wouldn't expect much improvement :(
Does your machine support USB 3?

We're reworking Media manager, maybe we can do something about this also.

That sound a lot.
Could you send us your composition file to mail@resolume.com so we can take a look if we could improve things somehow?
Thanks!

I just looked it up and it's was copying from & to the another partition on my secondary internal sata HDD
Crystal disk states its sata/600 connnected , 5500 rpm.

Resolume & OS is installed on my samsung regular internal SSD drive C:/ , not an EVO type.
My machine does support usb 3 , also one 3.1 port on there.

I'll mail the resolume comp over the weekend it's on my list. It is a really big comp with majority of my clips in there , a lot of backup stuff .

That would explain why it was so slow.

I don't have specific links, but a google search might give some results.

With HDD-s, reading from and writing to the same disk, and the latency involving head seeks is what slows things down a lot.
