NVIDIA Low FPS Issue

Post by lux4k »

I have seen numerous threads regarding this issue but haven't had any luck. I'm running a GTX1070 and can't get more than 60fps on a blank composition. GPU power is set to max performance and V-sync is on. There is no option to disable Optimus as far as I can tell.

Does anyone have a solution to this?

If you want a higher fps than 60 with vsync turned on your need a monitor that has a higher refresh rate. For example a 144Hz monitor. Alternatively you could turn vsync off which depending on the os's window manager will result in either tearing or prerendered frames being discarded.

The monitor is not the issue as I still float around 55 frames on a blank composition with no output connected. Unfortunately turning off V-sync is not an option as it results in tearing. Low FPS seems to be a common issue with NVIDIA cards, is there no other solution?

Hi cosmowe-
I get 130-140 with v-sync off.

Hey Lux,
so then, your GPU can obviously push some frames. Next question..
Low FPS seems to be a common issue with NVIDIA cards

to which thread are you referring to?

If you do the Resolume benchmark....how much clips can you play until you hit 30 fps?

V-sync off: Clean - 20+ layers, 90-100fps, Noise - 20+ layers, 80-90fps.
V-sync on: Clean - 20+ layers, 50-60fps, Noise - 20+ layers, 40-50fps.

Disabling Optimus seems to resolve the issue but unfortunately many of us don't have that option.

So....if I understand you right... your issue is that you have 55 fps displayed without any content running instead of 60fps. Is that right?
but - your benchmark results don't show any issue on the performance side.

What happens if you lock your comp to 60?
I'm running a GTX1070 and can't get more than 60fps
just to clear this out....you will never be able get more that 60 fps with v-sync enabled + 60hz monitor/projector or even without any physical output attached when your notebook-screen is set to 60hz.

My problem is that at best I get 55fps with V-sync on, even when locked to 60. When I connect an output (60hz) I'll barely get 30 frames.

Why did you never mentioned that in this thread before? ;) this seem to be your main issue....
V-sync off: Clean - 20+ layers, 90-100fps, Noise - 20+ layers, 80-90fps.
V-sync on: Clean - 20+ layers, 50-60fps, Noise - 20+ layers, 40-50fps.
- So you made the benchmark without any output display attached? why?
- your results showed that you can hit 60 fps and not max. 55 fps.

Please tell us exactly what sort of hardware you use...

- Notebook Brand, model id, complete hardware configuration (cpu, gpu, ram, ssd type...)
- External Display brand and model id
- Connection type (Computer to Display)
- Is your dedicated gpu listed on your external display when you click [output] > [show display info]
