Banding

Post by meetenshah »

Hi

I use resolume frequently . I have a sender card connecting to a videwall.
The sender card is set at 8bpc color depth. And my content was made in 16bpc after effects.

I see a lot of banding when i do some smoke animations.

My sender card has only 2 options. 8 or 12 bpc.

How can i resolve this issue, Im using MBP 2017 OS X Mojave.

Regards
Meeten

Is the Video wall set to full brightness?
Do you also see the banding in the output preview?

HI

Sorry was busy with events.

No, i have gone down to even 10% brightness.
No banding in preview, and if u use a flat led tv, its perfect. So i know its the sending card.
But again the sending card is only going to 8 bit or 12 bit color depth.

It works fine with graphics but as soon as i play even a video, the skin of the person or even the background because of lighting starts to show banding. Or even smoke effects will show banding because of the gradient.

Please help

Your led wall won't be able to do better color resolution at 10%, basically you're using only 10% of the 8 bits resolution your wall is probably capable of.

Hi

I dont know what that means.
Ive used 10% to all the way 100%.

And at 10% its less banding then at full.

But just experimenting ive found if u reduce the brightness and contrast it does make a difference.

That means that the LED walls are usually only able to display specific brightness levels.
At 100% your full range per color at 8 bits would be 256 steps, if you limit the brightness to 10%, you can only use 25 steps per color, so you lose a lot of color resolution and see banding.
At least that's how the walls I worked with functioned.
Using 10 bits per color should give you a better result, but check with the LED manufacturer for the best settings.
