glitches and lags when using midi cc internally

Post by dave4pool »

Hey;

This might be an old problem, but I can't quite find the right solution, so I'll post a new topic.

I'm just using the trial version of Arena, we're testing it to see if it'll work for our needs for audiovisual installations before buying a full version. We're generating audio in Ableton with midi controllers, passing midi cc messages through internal midi (I'm using Loop midi, but have tried others) to control various parameters in Resolume (doesn't matter which ones, I've tried loads)

One CC message to one parameter works fine, but add 2 at the same time and it starts to stutter and glitch (even though the message is totally smooth), and more than 2 it's totally unusable.

It's not a hardware issue, I have plenty of GPU, and I'm only using one clip to test anyway (it's properly encoded to DXV in alley, tried normal + high quality). Also, it works fine using external midi from another midi controller. I've elminated most other things and it seems to be incoming CC to resolume

It's only CC messages so I'd be really surprised if it couldn't handle more than 1 at a time, or am I misunderstanding something?

Appreciate any help massively
Dave

Sending output back to the loop midi could cause glitches and lags, because Resolume then gets the cc bac to the input, and then sends it out again and gets the input...
Is midi output to the loop disabled in Resolume?

Hey, thanks for the reply;

Yeah I disabled all midi output and any other midi ins (from other devices) so the only input / output is from the Midi in of the loop midi. So it's all clean from that respect.

What kind of midi controllers are in the setup, any Arduinos?

Could you make a screen recording of the incoming midi, and how the glitches look like?

Any duplicate midi shortcuts in the preset?

Hi!

Sorry for the delay, only getting back to it today.

Attached is an mp4 screen recording of me switching 3 basic midi LFOs on in ableton that are transferred to CC messages in ableton, then sent via an external instrument via loopmidi (https://www.tobias-erichsen.de/software/loopmidi.html). I've just mapped them to 3 random parameters, it doesn't matter which ones, they all have the same effect.

As you can see, 1 cc message is fine (not perfect, but useable), then when I turn on a second and 3rd, they hang and glitch.

Oh, and this is a new resolume comp, with only these 3 CCs mapped to these 3 parameters, so there aren't any conflicts / duplicates.

I'm fairly sure it's a problem with the resolume side, as I've tried a similar thing in Notch, and it seems to work fine, even with 7 or 8 CC messages simultaneously, driving quite heavy scenes

Could you please send us the Resolume log file via the feedback tab in preferences, and a screenshot of your midi preferences?
Thanks!

Hi, here's the screenshot of midi prefs, (note that all other midi controllers are all turned off) I'll send the log file from the auto email thing in preferences.

Thanks got the log, please update Resolume to the latest 6.1.5 from the bottom of our http://resolume.com/download page.

If you then still have issues, could you also attach your composition and shortcut preset?
Thanks!

Ok, I went ahead and installed Resolume 7, started a totally new comp (the default startup one), and just mapped the cc messages, nothing else. Same thing happens. I've attached the screenshot of shortcuts, and the composition file as well

3 CCs from Ableton to Resolume works smoothly for me to both Resolume 6 and 7.
Can you try to send to another app or check the midi with a monitor tool if the timestamps are in specific intervals?

Do you see these glitches which are in your screen recording also on your monitor?
