Performance!

Post by HerrNieDa »

i tried Resolume3 on all my PC's/Laptops and had always the same performance...
adding a 2nd layer @ 720p i always had under 20fps....
adding new effects an more layers may slow down to 15 fps...
i'm using quicktime photojpeg codec (@ 98%, maybe to much?)
with h264 the performance is a little bit slower and de cpu usage higher, but not the problem!
all 720p...
scaling a pal or lower source (my old footage mostly is indeo codec) performs better but with 2layers or above its much slower... even 5 layers isn't much and many effects are maybe just 5 to 10 fps slower than only 2 layers....
playing 1080p with 1080p clips, 2 layers not more than 7 fps :(
1920x480 is nearly faster than 720p, even with 1080p clips
hardware:
laptop core2 duo 2ghz, ati XT1600, 2gb ram, omega ati drivers
pc1, q6600 quadcore with geforce 7600 (& 6600), 4gb ram...forceware 94.x
pc2 pentiumD 805 dualcore with radeon 4670, 2gb ram.... newest ati driver
using xp sp3, also tried osx on pc1, maybe a little bit faster but not really...
also the performance playing pal isn't really better than in resolume2 expect the ability of using more layers and (new) effects

please help, i tried modul8 now wich performs very good, but thats the only one where modul8 is better...
i hate it but it runs so fast :(

Sadly I have no current source footage larger than 640x480, and they're all encoded in PICvideo M-JPEG codec v3...

But with 4 layers and effects, it is sticking very close to 60fps. I'm very interested to see how you fare with this issue.

My primary Viz machine is a Core2Duo 3ghz, 2 gig ram, BFG Nvidia 9800GTX OC 512meg.

I will be doing test encodes with Quicktime cross platform hopefully before the weekend as I have a new macbook too.

i don't think it has to do with the video files...
in 640x480 it runs about 30 frames on my machines...
try to set the composition to 1280x720... there i won't get more than 15fps with 3 layers from my PAL (or lower) footage or the demo clips!
would be interesting if it works better on your machine!
which OS do you use?
shoult i try Vista? :?

You can make the Resolume video engine run much faster by disabling the global effects and blend modes in the video preferences.

but the Blend modes
can't mix without then ;)
but i will try what it if it runs better then and report ;)
but where is the bottleneck?
CPU is not full load
Graphiccard from X1600 mobile, 7600GT, 4670... is a geforce 8800 or higher maybe much better?
Ram/HD: 2 or 4 GB (did'nt managed if the clips ar loaded into RAM, but it's more the Compilation Resoulution and not the Clip Resolution which slows down the performance)
what else?
a extra Windows installation woult also be much better i think, but that's not the real Problem i guess...

i hope it's getting faster anyhow, would be reaaally nice ;)

Using Vista Ultimate here mainly due to having the licence handy. I'm not seeing the sluggishness some have complained of. Benefits over XP? nothing really.

Vista supports DirectX 10, has nothing to do with resolume i think but the thing is like in XP some years ago it supports more Features... but' this should'nt matter..
anyway, it shoult run on a mac book pro hardware or the macuser's are happy with it :D
sry but i don't understand why resolume2 runs in pal like hell and sucks in 720p, and resolume3 is maybe 10 percent faster and can play more layers
is there a opinion to deactivate audio?
woult a option to deactivate audio on all layers (but layer1) for examplee?
and deacitvate different blend modes on different layers for performance enhance..(first layer only needs additive, alpha, maybe litgen and keying...?
i'll think i'll try arkaos :D maybe it fits my requirements :p
but i'm really lookind forward for the new resolume..
i'm using the old one since 1.51, about 5 years - hardcore!
and althought it's getting boring, it's the best solution for VIDEO mixing! (and the ned A/V option is the best one i've ever seen!).
just tried without blend modes and global effects, really runs okay ;)
i don't wanna say to use other vj software to others (because i hate it really ;) ) but they are goot optnions in playing hd or multiscreening... and i woult really prefer resolume for anything which is "viewable"...
i know you have other problems now to get the thing to work but i can't really work with a software without blendmodes... and then not even keying!?
hope u understand my "high end" features.... althought 1920x480 runs okay!
but full hd :(
i can''t see the bottleneck, but we can't also use your's .. aight?
sry, back from gig with r2.41 and x.ing m8 ;)

I'm just testing the new build on osx, and I'm getting even poorer performance than the last beta, 8-9fps with 2 layers of PAL res quicktime photojpg 75%, I've tested the same files in vdmx and they play smooth as silk, cpu monitor is showing at least double the load of vdmx too, around 60%, disk access is no more than 2.5-3 MB p/second off an external firewire drive.
Actually just 1 layer is dropping frames, any suggestions as to why? These files all play fine in other osx apps, this is just adding files to the default project no fx default blend modes. The same when disabling fx+blends.
Its a mbp 2.2 2gb ram running 10.5.5 and qt 7.5.5

Im just trying it on my 17" same clips same drive and its says 38fps, but there are still judders, just like r2 huh?
Shame, just looking for an av player for a friends (quite famous) band too, ting No Sale.
Please let me know if there is something I can try to fix or troubleshoot this issue.

On Xp on the 17" frame rate still drops to 20-22 with 2 clips, but the playback is smoother still not perfect though.
