Record video switcher main output.

Post by BuboyIX »

Hello,

I would like to know if what are the ways to record off a video switcher? I want to record the main output of the switcher. What HD recorders (hardware/software) can you guys recommend? I prefer to record in full HD given that the switcher can output 1080p.

I do it with a second notebook with a USB 3.0 Magewell HDMI/SDI Capture Dongle and the free Open Broadcaster Software.

Thank you for your suggestions. How about for backup? I assume a similar setup is required.

For HDMI I use the Ninja 2.

If you want a backup, I would get two paired with an upstream DA. Don't use the through port on the first recorder in case of hardware failure. Are you outputting via HDMI or SDI?

What is an "upstream DA"?

I can either use HDMI or SDI, as I come across a lot of switchers too aside from our own.

Distribution Amplifier before your recorders.

You might want to consider getting something that can do both HDMI & SDI

Is that different from a splitter? Does the term "splitter" apply only on HDMI, DVI and VGA?

A splitter is a 1x2 distribution amplifier assuming it amplifies.

A great one for you since you want to be flexible from project to project would be the Decimator MD-HX paired with a couple of SDI recorders.
