Edge Blending & Frame Sync

Post by Hobbes »

Hello Everyone,

I will be rear-projecting onto a curved screen using 2 projectors, edge-blended on center to create one, panoramic image, approximately 3840x1080. Some of the content will be the top or bottom half of 4K video or still images fitted into the elongated aspect ratio.

For the videos, I am concerned about frame sync between the left and right projectors. Would it be best to use something like a DualHead2Go or Datapath Fx4? Or would it be better run 2 separate streams directly from my MacBook Pro's Thunderbolt 3 ports, each to a playback device like something from the Blackmagic Ultrastudio line? To give you an idea of its video output capabilities, the MacBook I am running has four Thunderbolt 3 ports, each capable of driving a 4K monitor (driving up to four simultaneously).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Haven’t tried one of the newer usb c/tb3 MacBook Pro’s yet, but my gut feeling is that a Datapath FX4 will give you the smoothest output. Just use one good quality tb3 to DisplayPort cable and then set the FX4 input edid to 3840x1080

Thanks for the reply. The Fx4 does seem like a good option, but it is very expensive ($2873 for the unit with SDI outputs, which is what I need). I'm hoping to spend less if I can still achieve the same result.

I had no Sync Problems when i use 2DP-HDMI on my windows machine. But i had a Datapath "under the table" ( wordwise) and could use it when there were any Problems while Setup.

As long as both outputs are directly outputs of your card it should be fine.

I didnt used the HDMI becouse of the (maybe) different Blkaclvl between mDP & Hdmi. (This can be takled inside the advanced output as well)

Has anyone used the "AJA Io 4K" for this purpose?

I have used the Aja HA5-4K as a way of outputting 4x 1080p60 HD-SDI in sync.
