need Mobo advise for PCI-E Lanes

Post by e23415 »

This rig is for a new venue need for 7 x 4k output, been tested 1080TI can do the job well with LED processor. Found this mobo Asus Z170-WS come with 4 PCI-E x 16.

i7-7700K
Asus Z270-WS (with 4 PCI-E x 16)
4 x 8G Ram
970 EVO 1TB M.2 / 10T harddisk for storage
1080TI x 2 (for 7 x 4k output)
Blackmagic DeckLink 8K Pro (with 3 SDI Cam input)

Any input would be welcome! Thanks!

keep in mind that phyical PCI-E slots are not the same as PCI-E lanes. that 7700k only has 16 lanes, meaning if you're running 3 cards like that you'll be running in
8x for 1080ti 1
4x for 1080ti 2
4x for decklink 8k

and your storage will be on chipset (meaning slower performance).

also keep in mind that all the rendering will be done on the first 1080ti, so you don't need 2x of them.. if you want to use GPU outputs you can use basically any other cheaper nvidia card for second output.

I am leaning towards using Threadripper for systems with many cards like this as there's 64 lanes, though the CPU itself isn't quite as fast.

hope this helps a bit!
