I have this card in my second comp. Generally it works as expected, but there are two strange things with it:
A) It definitely consumes a lot of system power. When i don't use it, my System (Resolume, DVD players or simply WinMediaplayer) runs significantly faster.
I could improve the situation a bit by upgrading my system with more RAM.
There were some threads in the Matrox support forums concerning this topic.

No, you don't need a scan converter. You only need different cables (tv-out cables) from Matrox.
B) BUT there is a big problem with them. Don't buy these:

I had initially bought those, they don't work!! I even had to contact the Matrox Support, the support guy himself needed some days to figure out, that these cables don't work. You need these:

Watch for the price ... you can only get them from Matrox, you need them twice (for 4 outs), you need to order those in the US.
So you'll end in around 110⬠extra.
