VGA to S-video / DVI to S-video ?

Post by loudanov »

Hey guys,

Here's my problem.
My system (NVidea 8600 Geforce M GS) only has a DVI-out, which I convert with a simple plug to VGA. This works fine...
But I need to accomplish a S-video plug OUT somehow so I can set-up 15+ meters from the projector.
(with VGA I'm bound to practically stand NEXT to the projector...)

I read that a VGA-signal has to be converted to a S-video-signal with somekind of splitter/transformer,
But those are kinda expensive.

Ain't there any easy/cheap method (maybe a simple converter-plug) for me to get S-video-OUT from my system?
-Without buying a new videocard
-without need of splitter/transformer-boxes

Thanks in advance!

Hey loudanov,

if your notebook doesn't have a composit nor a s-video port I would say you need a scan converter. (however I'm not an expert!) - The website of NVidia says that the 8600M "Integrated HDTV encoder provides analog TV-output (Component/Composite/S-Video) up to 1080i/1080p resolution" (http://www.nvidia.co.uk/page/geforce_8M_techspecs.html). In theory your graphics card can do s-video, but the analog interface is missing. According to the DVI specification a DVI plug supports (besides the digital) only analog RGB signals, but no composit/s-video. - But the older MacBooks used to have a DVI to composit/s-video adapter (http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9267G/A) and it's only $20 so I cannot imagine that there is any electronic inside. Again you see I haven't a clue. - Sorry :(

Try to contact the manufacturer of your notebook and ask if the DVI port also "offers" a s-video signal.

A collegue-VJ told me VGA lost quality over longer distances, that's why she used S-video.
But if you you guarantee me VGA over 20m works just fine: Then I'm buying myself such a cable.

vga does loose quality over distance. it "should" be ok but i wouldnt like to guarantee it will be fine over 20 metres.

I bought a 20m VGA-cable...
I used it for my past gig...
WORKED LIKE CHARM!!!

(though there was a bit of noise in the final image, the overall quality wasn't significantly less)

Thanks for helping me out guys!

There are some small and cheap converters on the mac store.

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/s ... co=NTMxNDY

I have got one and it works without any problems.

What cable is going to look better for using an HDTV as a Computer Moniter? VGA or HDMI? Ive already tried a VGA cable from my computer to my 32" HDTV and it looks excellent. I'm wondering if its worth going out and buying an hdmi cable. Does it really look that much better?
