Etch a Sketch

Post by soundnut »

Hey All,
Newbie here...
Wondering if anyone can clue me in on how to accomplish the "etch a sketch" type of effect I've seen used quite a bit on projection mapping videos show on youtube:

I have a bunch of 2'x2'x2' cubes setup in a pyramid stack and wanna know how to do the "edge drawing" or as I call it etch sketch type effect.
Thanks in advance
Happy Mapping

Let's say you're mapping a single cube. You're essentially doing the same thing on three different surfaces (only 3 of 6 are visible). Use After Effects outside edge of your AE composition. I often use the Vegas effect to do this. Should you need help doing this look up "After Effects EKG effect Vegas". Render it out and map the video to each side of your cube. THis is a very basic way of doing it. Once you do it, you'll understand how to do more advanced tracing.

Thanks for the quick reply Day VeeJay :)
I kinda figured the only way to do it was keyframe animation. Some people are using QC, Cinema 4D or After Effects.
Any QC guys wanna chime in on how this could be done in Quartz ?? Are there any plugins, patches, modules etc available ?

Animated Line Stroke

Post by fruitygreen »

Used to do alot of the "Etch a Sketch" and/or "Animated Line Stroke" stuff.

With AfterEffects (AE) it is very easy to do simple to complex line strokes.

Check here:http://library.creativecow.net/articles ... stroke.php

With additional plugins for AE you can make it glow, distort, shimmer and so on.

AfterEffects would be the tool for this.
QuartzComposer is free but limited.

Hope that helps

I use cinema 4d and for this effect i use splines to model the structure and then use sweep nurbs and animate the end growth parameter with a glowing type texture

C4d gives you the best control over the look of your tracers... Iike using trapcode 3d stroke in ae

The think that makes them the coolest is creative animation curves and also animating your taper as it flies around
