Gaussian Blur causes slowness

Post by suzybee »

Hi,
I'm writing about a problem i've always had but i'm wondering if there may be a way around it instead of just putting up with it...

I like to use the Gaussian Blur a lot when i VJ.
I use it on individual layers and on the whole composition, it's a really important part of my visual style.

However, it seems to always strain my CPU, because whenever i have blur active i always notice the playback becomes juddery and slow, and so the flow of the movement of the clips is compromised which is a real shame.
It even happens when i don't have many layers or other effects going on...

I wonder if there's another way to create a blur effect, or if by nature the Blur effect is hard work for the computer to generate?
Do other people have this problem too?

I use a macbook pro with solid state hard drive.
Many thanks,
Suzybee :)

I'd suggest blurring your footage before you put it in resolume, because yes, blur does slow things down.

Gaussian Blur is a computationally expensive operation. There are "cheaper" kinds of blur.

An interesting (though quite technical) discussion here...

I don't have any FFGL effects to direct you to at this moment.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies -i'll have a look at the article.
It would be great if some lovely programmer would create another Blur effect which is less draining for the computer to render... (just sayin ;) )
Cheers!

Get a better computer it will happen before someone programs a better blur. Most modern machines don't choke on it. I would suggest you dial down the blur quality first.

You could always use the focus on the projector itself for processing free blurring...
