Photos: Projection Mapping and 12 channels of SDI

Post by Meptik »

Hey everyone! Wanted to a share a project we recently did.

We worked on a scenic design and projection mapping driven by Resolume at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

Resolume drove drive 12x channels of 1080/30P content across 11 projectors and 1 LED wall.
- 7x Panasonic PT-RZ31KU 31,000 lumen Laser Projectors - for scenic mapping
- 4x Barco HDX-20 Projectors - for side edge blend screens.
- 1x LED wall

We built custom servers over the past 8 months and spent quite a bit of time fine-tuning the performance of the machines. All machines were built on X99 Mobo's, with 3 SSD's per machine, 2x SSD's strictly for content. All machines run 6 core chips with 64 GB of Ram.

Very nice work Meptik! Seems that these photos should be on the Resolume website!

Send more details of your setup if you can.

A few questions:
  • Did you sync your servers using the master/slave or a third party controller?
If third party controller, did you use Artnet, timecode or OSC?
Were the Barcos used on the two side wide screens?
Did you use any live cameras to do imag?
What did you think of the PT-RZ31KU?
How big was your LED wall

@Oaktown - to answer your questions:
- We used two servers, one main and one backup. We attempted to sync them via Resolume's OSC outputs functionality. However, it seemed to cause a lot of issues, to the point where the backup would often crash. We ended up just manually chasing the backup.
- no third party controllers this time. We've used many midi and OSC options before, and have considered t for corporate events.
- yes, the Barcos were used for the two 2x1 side screens.
- all camera sources were switched separately, upstream, of Resolume In a Barco E2 system.
- the Panasonic 31k lasers were not very impressive. Light output almost seemed dimmer comparable to the 20k's.
- LED wall, off the top of my head, was 1920x384,Inc resolution I believe.

Woah
Many thanks! Turned out well.

We're really looking forward to what V6 in Resolume will bring for performance and updates as this we've been pushing the limits of high resolution and total number of outputs. Thanks!

What did you guys use to get SDI out of the system? Been looking for a good option for awhile.

EDIT: I saw your other posts about 4K HDMI to 4x SDI converters. Just curious which ones you're using.

I'm guessing some config of external converters. Three HDMI outputs... Hdmi to 6gsdi, then an sdi multiplexer to give four hd-sdi's per original source.

I'm curious as to why the 31K laser would not perform as expected.

Where your 7 31ks blended to do all the pyramids behind the two screens?

How big were your screens with the Barcos and how big was the area for the Panasonics?

Not too sure - spent a lot of time trying to tweak their color and brightness output, but they just didn't punch like we all expected them too.

3 on stage left, 3 on stage right, and 1 on the mountain, correct. The two side screens were 10'x30' blended with dual 20k's.
Decklink Quad 2's?
No - we tried to use Decklink's but performance was spotty. Never got consistent FPS performance it seemed. Also, BlackMagic cards get weird when you have multiple cards in the machine, in our testing.
EDIT: I saw your other posts about 4K HDMI to 4x SDI converters. Just curious which ones you're using.
Correct, we've been using AJA HA5-4k's for a while now, we own 6 of them which is great. They let us do 4K to Quad HD-SDI, the only limitation is that the outputs are all progressive, so doing 1080/60P is sometimes difficult being 3G HD-SDI. Otherwise, been a great solution for us.
