Performance issues on Alienware 17 r4 - GTX 1060

Post by Eyebyte »

Greetings,

Im having some issues and it may be an easy fix, but its got me stumped.

I got a new Alienware 17 R4 Laptop. Specs as follows:

i7 7700
Nvidia GTX 1060
16g Ram @ 2400
1080 Display
NVME SSD

http://www.dell.com/support/manuals/us/ ... lang=en-us

Running Resolume 6.0.1
Windows 10 64 bit
Nvidia Driver 388.31 also rolled back to 388.13, same issue.

Im getting very average playback running a 1080 composition. When I trigger a column of clips (3 layers), it drops to ~20 fps. It seems to cache it and eventually settles back to ~59 fps, but it takes a few seconds to deal with it.
There is also a minor stutter when triggering even 1080 clips as single clips, 1 layer.
Its not as snappy as a GTX 970m in another MSI machine and this thing should be kicking ass.

Is there a driver issue? What am I missing?

Normally I would troubleshoot it to death myself, but I am knee deep in gigs and any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Mikey

Do you have Afterburner, Sonic Suite, or Nahimic installed on your machine?
Have you checked your nvidia control panel and set arena (total war) in your 3d settings to high performance gpu?

No, I dont have those installed. Only CS6 and Resolume 6 really. Clean install.

Its interesting that an M2 drive cleans it up.

I would always replace the stock drive with a Seagate BaraCuda 9mm 2tb drive as soon as I get a new laptop, which has been solid. This time I went with a Seagate FireCuda 2TB 9mm SSD/HD Hybrid.

It feels like that might be the issue - SSD/HDD Hybrid drive caching.

The FireCuda has got 8G of SSD and the rest on a platter. Perhaps the caching on it is giving me the lag. It comes good after a few seconds like it should. I think that this is where my dilemma lies. Not in the GPU, but the HDD the clips are on.

Ill do some tests on it on my next gig and report back.

Are your clips DXV?

I have a similar spec to yours:

i7 7700HQ
GTX1060 6GB
32GB DDR4-2400
500GB m.2 Samsung 850 SSD

Converted all my videos to DXV3 Normal Quality no alpha for playback.

Back in 5.1.4, i'm able to maintain my fps above 90+ with 3 outputs.
Now even with 1 video playing with 2 outputs on duplicate via windows, i'm barely hitting above 40fps.

Tried setting the fps to Auto, 60fps, 50fps, no difference.

It's capable of reaching 59.99fps for a few split seconds, then it drops back down again.

I use SVP to interpolate/frameblend my source videos to 50/60fps, but if resolume is unable to reach that output, it is kinda redundant.

Any insight as to why the big performance drop?

Yes, DXV all the way.

It seems that the SSD/HDD hybrid is the culprit.
I will know for sure after I replace it, but for future reference, Id say dont use an SSD/HDD Hybrid drive for triggering clips.

Try uninstalling the GeForce experience, and also make sure you're using the very latest drivers. ShadowPlay can affect your FPS.

Alright just a little update:

installed the latest driver from nvidia (388.59) and that fixes the problem, i'm getting full 60fps(thereabouts) with DXV playback

edit: I might have said it a little to early.

Currently doing a show which requires me to send 2 outputs to 2 different destinations, screens are duplicated on windows' end, so resolume is only sending out 1 signal, but it seems to cause my system to slow down a lot, even when playing back DXV videos.

Did not encounter this issue back in 5.1.4
