Controlling LEDs in Arena 7 with DMX

Post by J&B »

Hi all
We’re currently using Resolume for live electronic-based AV performance, with live midi-synced visuals (not really relevant but to give some background we use MPC Live and Modular with Ableton).

We normally use projection mapping for the visuals, and for an upcoming show are looking to sync LED strips with the projection for some added strobe emphasis.

We’ve used OSC and Arduino (for mapping participant gestures) with Resolume previously and are also fine with mapping Midi in Resolume but don’t know much about DMX!

To start with, all we’re trying to achieve at a basic level is connecting up a WS2812 LED strip to Resolume and turning it off and on, when a clip triggers. So some hardware advice and setup/connection help is what we’re after.

We’ve read a bit about Enttec and support being withdrawn for certain USB DMX controllers, but don’t really know anything about art-net.

We have a cheap DMX decoder from Amazon which may or may not be useful (unsure if it’s art-net compatible but guessing not) https://amzn.eu/d/boJxt1d

and also a usb to dmx converter cable, also cheap and probably useless! https://amzn.eu/d/1Rwm1eu

We’re looking at buying a Chauvet DMX-AN2 but unsure if this would help. We are currently running Resolume 7 on an M1 Mac Mini, so have an Ethernet port.

We’ve managed to hook the LEDs up to the DMX decoder and used QLC+ to change the colours, so we know the strip is working, but are struggling to figure out what we need for Resolume to be able to see them.

Apologies in advance for
1. Posting in the wrong thread if we have
2. Missing out anything major which would help clarify the problem

If anyone could offer any specific advice or point us to a relevant, helpful, up-to-date thread we’ll check that out instead. We have looked at the Resolume help on DMX and the DIY option is a bit beyond us as we only have a very basic limited knowledge of coding for specific projects, and the post states that an understanding of code is imperative.

Thanks in advance
Becky

These devices work great when connected to your computer via ethernet cable:

Thanks Arvol, the second is a little out of our price range! The first looks similar to the Chauvet DMX-AN2 (which is also cheaper) so maybe we will try our luck with the Chauvet as it wouldn’t need to be shipped from outside of the UK (there are already some in the country).

Appreciate the reply though
