Here is a video with a basic setup using the slice transform.

In this quick demo, I just made the comp twice the width of the clips, defined stage left and stage right slices, dropped the two slices in the two clips and at first mapped G & H to switch the blind modes independently and then mapped all blind modes to G.

Please note that I didn't change the position of my clips in the comp and of course in this example I preset my blind modes accordingly.

instead of using layer router to toggle different input maps, can slice transforms be used to achieve this?

Yes, that's what it's designed for.

If we're going to be pedantic about it, you don't actually toggle input maps. You make one input map for your stage and it always stays the same. Using the Slice Transform, you create different looks with your footage based on the input map, and you switch between those looks.

Where are you having difficulty? That's pretty much what it does.
