Simple mixing mode question?

Hi,

This question is either very simple or reveals some basic misunderstanding I have about the software.

I can't seem to finding a layer mixing mode for just straight-up compositing: putting one clip ("A") with an alpha channel on top of another clip ("B") such that B shows behind A where A is transparent.

From what I gather, the "Add" mode adds the RGB values of A and B, rather then just replacing B with A where alpha=1.

Using the automask effect and setting the contrast to 100% does a pretty good job, but I presume that adds to processing time and I'd rather not add it to every clip with an alpha channel.

Is there a mixing mode I am missing, or another way to super-impose clips with alpha channels?

Thanks
-mike

I see - the problem was that my footage actually had some transparency through the whole image. Thanks for the response...
