How much gear do you bring to a show?

There's many options for gear out there. Light weight and mobile or robust and heavy as hell.

A 17" MacBook Pro would be nice, top of the line with a APC20. You'd be able to fit it all into a single backpack and perform on a single 1080p projector flawlessly.. maybe 2.

A tower is more my style, although heavy. Paired with an APC40 and a 24" monitor keyboard and magic trackpad. I'm able to haul it all around in a large suitcase. Wrap a towel around the screen and tower for protection. Also a backpack for cables, stingers, adapters etc. I leave my ipad and mac book air at home, keeping it simple helps keep track of everything.

What do you bring?

Depends on the job, sometimes a laptop, sometimes 2 laptops, sometimes a mixer/matrix switcher and beamer(s), sometimes the big machine (2x GTX560ti)

Its a peli case with our tower, a 22" dell monitor with deatachable stand and all the cables needed to run the thing.

Depends on the show...sometimes I also supply projection and/or LED wall, and sometimes an entire lighting rig as well.

So it could anywhere from my macbook and lighting console to a dozen tractor trailers.

My server rack (for any jobs requiring more than a single video output) consists of;

3x Media Server (gtx 780, HD/SDI input card, 32gb ram, 3930K, 1x 1tb media SSD, 1x 1tb software HDD in a 4u rack)
1x KVM Switch
1x KVM
1x UPS
1x Ethernet switch
1x Artnet -> DMX Node
and a drawer full of misc video/networking adapters and 300' of Cat6e

case itself is a 30"x24"x20u Box, so fits pretty well into standard truck packs.

That's a nice case Bildwerk, did you customize the foam to fit your specific gear? I'd like to do the same, but with a 24" monitor if it'd fit.

at the time we bought that computer our main goal was to get the thing transportable. the peli case comes with customizable foam - there are 3 layers pre cutted in squares and you simply deattach the foam you dont need.

first we thought about getting a rack with a 4U case - but allone the housing for the pc weighted about 15 kg. so we took a standard atx case made of aluminium and fitted everything to that. the weight of the case with content is about 25 kg, so it would theoretically be possible to just board a plane and check in the case.

there are larger peli cases avaliable, but our goal was to stay below 30 kg :)

i love to use video-mixer setups.... (got an edirol v4 and some other old fashioned mixers)
see my signature for possible setups...
now i mostly use my new schenker notebook... for one beamer with mapping or a simple panorama (with matrox) the 650m is fast enough... if there's more to output i use my main vj system.
btw. running the notebook with win8 and eyetv hybrid rockstable.... the last 5 gigs the thing never ever crashed ;)

on my macbook i do PAL-stuff, don't really use quartz/syphon...

as controller i use ios devices and i also got a akai mpd24... the problem is that midi isn't very stable for me... i'm just working on a solution to convert the midi to osc.... cause osc is much more stable...

the last main thing are live cameras (got 3 mini dv cams, one of them hdv)...
love to work with live cameras.. especially cause noone else seems to use this here in vienna :p

Every gig varies, but I always bring a main and a backup system. Getting a client to understand that they should pay for a backup system is a completely different story.
