Big project with 49 layers

Hi!

I have an Ableton / Resolume project.

I want to link the notes of a 49 keyboard from Ableton to Resolume. Each note plays a different video on Resolume. The main problem is that when I play quickly, Resolume becomes slow and the notes are not synchro anymore. I have the last macbook pro retina and I'm wondering if the last mac pro with 32 gb of ram and Dual AMD FirePro D700 GPUs with 6GB of GDDR5 VRAM would be ok for this project?

My output is at 1080p and each video for notes are small (300kb).

Thanks

Best,
Florent

do you have to play the 49 videos all at once?

I think i know what ravensc is going to get at...

How many are you playing at once ? the max i'm thinking is 10, namely because you only have 10 fingers

Reason for this is that you can set the composition, set clip target to free layer, set clip trigger style to piano.

This will reduce the load on the card & computer to process, and help you overall...

the only other question is are you running any effects on the clips/layers and how many cause that will also tax the system as well...

I'm not doing VJ work in the classical sense, but when the subject of playing lots of layer is coming up this comes to my mind:

Ok, I read your post again...

Adding to the free layer option you can use, you can also have your clips playing in piano mode - while you hold the keys.
I assume you have all your clips as DXV, and have the beat snapping disabled.
Also make sure you don't send midi from resolume creating a midi loop.

(If you'd need to play all those clips at once then you'll need powerful hardware GPU, SSD RAID...,
and/or scale your composition and clips down.)

Hi

Thanks a lot for the answers here!
So..

Aha no, no more than 10 notes, yes, but even with 10 notes the graphics are slow and their is lot of latency on my mac book pro.

Yes I have set clip target to free layer and clip trigger style to piano.

There are no effects on the layers, but the fusion mode is 50 Add on the 49 layers.

This will be not vomit, just small elements adding nicely together, eheh.

WOW I din't know about DVX so I'll try it, it could be a solution!!! Does it changes a lot on latency?

Beat snapping disabled, yes.

@chenthemagician : what do you mean by 'you can set the composition' ?

Thanks you're very helpful.

Best,
Florent

it will get the decoding load off the cpu and move it to the gpu.
imagine how playing a lot of videos in quicktime at once puts load on the cpu, there can be a delay in the midi note processing too on a busy cpu, with dxv the decoding is done in the gpu.
I tried a test composition dxv with clips mapped to keyboard on a 2012 mbp, and I get instant playback of the clips.

Hi!

So I tried today with DVX codec and it seems to work well! Thank you so much!

Another thing you can do to speed up a composition when you're dealing with a lot of layers is to "Disable global effects and blend modes" in the Video tab of the Preference menu. You're left with only the Alpha compositing mode but from your description it sounds like it could work nicely.

Awesome that you have it working properly...

In resolume, you can set various operations to all the clips added to your composition, go to Composition->Clip trigger style and Composition -> Clip Target, this is setting it globally, vs doing it individually...
