Capturing live input to MacBook Pro (USB-C)

Post by royb0t » Sat Sep 21, 2019 04:36

Hello! I've been using Resolume Avenue for the past few years for live performances and loving it. I'm collaborating on a new project, and had the idea of taking a friend's video performance and hopefully overlay my own visuals as performed in Resolume at certain sections - sort of like a Syphon or live input - however I'm a bit stumped on getting the live video into my computer.

To complicate things, I'm on a MacBook Pro (2018) with all USB-C ports, and they're on a Windows laptop. I have an old BlackMagic UltraStudio Express but oddly in my testing, it doesn't seem to show up (I might need to buy a different thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 adapter however). Is there a recommended piece of hardware that might get live input to show up in Resolume? Or maybe I'm dabbling with something only Arena can do?

If any more details are needed, happy to fill in more. Thanks in advance! <3

Hey royb0t,
you can use the NDI functionality of Resolume. You need a usb-c to ethernet dongle. A simple but reliable gigabit network switch and two CAT cables. Bring yours and the computer of your friend into the same network.

Your friend has to activate his NDI output

And you just have to pic his NDI sender up from the source menu.

Voila!

cosmowe - thanks so much for the quick reply! Sorry I didn't see it sooner, also thanks for the screenshots - very helpful!

Unfortunately I think in my enthusiasm about Resolume, I didn't as clearly detail - my collaborator doesn't have Resolume, and would be performing some video game/art conent (I think from Unreal). Is it possible for them to just line out an HDMI cable into some recommended capture device, that from their computer would assume it's just a second monitor, and I can use Resolume to use it as input, which I can then do overlays and switch to my video materials back and forth?

I feel like the BlackMagic Ultrastudio Express, or maybe some newer capture card that takes USB-C directly might be in down the right path, but not sure on how to best configure this. Thanks again in advance!

Worth checking out the new ATEM Mini from Blackmagic. Has a USB c “webcam” output which resolume should recognise.
