Linking Resolume and Ableton on two different computers

Post by virginiatoffetti »

Hi,

we are wondering how to link and sync two different computers, one mac M1 with Ableton 11 and one windows10 with Resolume 7.

We are aiming to interface the two computers, in order to send midi data from the mac M1 using Ableton to Resolume. The objective is to receive midi data (cc and note on/off) into Resolume, in order to manage clip launch or/and opacity control on selected clips on Resolume.

Does someone has some advices, please?

We had a look into this tutorial ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoIqlcA ... nGrayMedia ), but the plug in suggested can't be found anymore.

We are also thinking of using OSC controls, but we need to convert midi data into OSC data, and find a way to send the data from Ableton to Resolume, syncing the two computers.
We couldn't manage to create a LAN network on Windows10, and the Windows10 couldn't connect to the local host of mac M1.

The next thing we are gonna try is to connect the two computer using a ethernet cable, and send the midi data through OSCSMPTE.

We are stuck :/

Any help would be much appreciated.

Bests,
Virginia

As the Name of the function already says:

"Ableton Link" - which is also available in Resolume you can link Resolume with Ableton by syncing the BPM.

difficuty: supereasy
time to set up: 30 seconds... :D

But i guess you knew this already. Ofc this has nothing to do with controlling specific functions over midi.

Mb tools like Spout, Bome Midi Translator or LoopBe1 can be part of a solution. also there have been midi over ethernet tools but i dont remember the names as it has been some years where i was deeper into Midi. If i remember i will add this here in the Thread.

Another Option could be to sync the control u use for ableton instead of syncing the computers (beside to sync BPM over Ableton Link). If u use for example a midi controller to control Ableton live you could use a hardware Midi Spliiter to send same midi data to the Mac as well as to the Windows PC and just map the functions u want to have triggered in sync to the functions u trigger in ableton.

I've just been looking at this. As @OdyPody said a MIDI hardware solution would be the way to go if the cable runs are short. For long runs/distance from say stage to FOH Ableton Link, OSC or ArtNet (MIDI > DMX > MIDI) over Ethernet or wireless would work.

You have any DMX to Midi / Midi to DMX Software or Hardware Tool in Mind?

Hello,

We had to face this not long ago.
IP network for both computer have to be near 192.....33 and 192.....34 for ex
BUT it seems like subnetwork got to be the same AND for us it had worked only when we copy the Mac subnetwork to the PC , not the other way round...

After this : Max for Live Plugin for OSC linking:

and this great tutto : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoIqlcAGjEw

And here is another tool :
