Best Output Record Solution

I have been using Resolume successfully in live situations for several years. My setup is a MacBook Pro and I use only still images, animating them from MIDI and audio control coming from a second laptop running Ableton. Now I want to record the video output for an installation and I am finding the video quality is not adequate. I have tried Syphon which is a little better than the internal Resolume recording but still not as smooth as I'd like no matter which codec I choose. What would be the best and least expensive solution for capturing the output to another computer? I have a MacPro and other laptops available, but I am not familiar with this process. Would an HDMI output to a capture device give a recording that would be as good as the original as it's generated in Resolume? Any suggestions would be very welcome as I need to create this in the next few weeks!

If you've got a spare computer, HDMI to any Blackmagic Design HDMI capture device will yield excellent results as long as you're dealing with broadcast resolutions. I personally use the BMD thunderbolt mini recorder and it works great. If you need a larger output than 1920x1080 you could get a 4K capture device and build your screen output in Arena 5.

What is with the "Record boxes" you can place in the Hdmi output chain. To be save you can also split the Signal and use the Spare line.

I think, cheaper then a capture card & a 2nd Laptop and they say it records 1080p. Anyone ever tested this stuff ?

Don't forget the free Open Broadcaster software: https://obsproject.com/

You'll get a good record quality with a decent framerate if you have a powerfull system.
Pros: You don't need extra hardware.

I have successfully been able to capture the Resolume output with a capture device, and the resulting movie looks great. The device captures it as an .mp4. Now I want to bring the movie back into Resolume so I can project it using Arena's mapping functions. When I export the .mp4 to a .mov using Quicktime pro and put the single movie into Resolume it loses a lot of quality. Can someone suggest the best way to take my .mp4 and put it into Resolume with no loss of quality? I do not want to use any effects or mixing, just to play back one movie using the multiple projector capabilities of Arena. The final movie will be about 20-25 minutes long.

You might want to check your export settings in QT7 Pro.

Are you using DXV3 codec?

I have been using the DXV3 codec..what should the settings be? I've been using High Quality, should I use Alpha or not? My size is 1920 x 1080 HD. Anything else I might be missing? After reading your post I changed the size which helped, now the brightness seems to be the issue - I'm correcting it in Quicktime as I export.

You don't need to use alpha unless you have an alpha channel and mp4 does not have alpha so no need to.

Make sure your two files are sized the same with identical frame rate when you convert. Have you tried converting with MPEG Streamclip to compare the results?
