Having headache for global effects, layer routing, advanced output.

Hey forum! I'm trying to apply some effects — the Recolour and the Strobe effects — to 2 groups of layers.
I'm using Resolume Arena 5.1.2 on macOS Sierra on an iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013).

I'm using the advanced output and my setup has 3 projectors but 2 screens:
  • * The screen in the center is one Resolume screen
    * The 2 screens on the side are joined in one Resolume screen
My composition setup is like this

I'd like to apply those effects to Screen: "Center" and to Screen: "Side".

I searched in the forums and I found some posts by user Joris. Now I understand that
Composition effects work as follows: combine the pixels of layer 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 together, then apply the effect *once*, on that combined result.
This means that I can't use composition global effects but the reasoning is similar to my desirable solution: in the center-screen combine the pixels of layer Background, Center Only and Text together, then apply the effect *once*, on that combined result and on the side screens the same thing: combine the pixels of layer Background, Side Only and Text together, then apply the effect on that combined result. The problem is I can't find the layer routing setup to achieve this kind of thing.
They do *not* work as follows: apply the effect on layer 1, apply the effect on layer 2, apply the effect on layer 3, apply the effect on layer 4, apply the effect on layer 5, and combine the result of those pixels. In fact, that's what layer effects do.
And that's one of the things I tried, applying the same effect on every layer with different keyboard shortcuts but the top-most layer, a transparent .png with the logo for example, gets effected with the alpha channel not considered so it blocks every layer below.

How would you tackle this problem?

I would start by eliminating the layer to slice routing from your setup.

Instead, I would create an input map that resembles your stage setup. It's difficult to make an example based on your particular setup, because you don't mention what the actual output should look like. Based on your description, I would assume something like this:

Blue + Red = Background + Text & FX, both covering everything
Cyan = Center Screen, just in the middle of the comp.
Green = Side Only, just on the sides of the comp

Using the composition as a tool for compositing this output (what's in a name, right?), you can easily create four layers that will only show content in the designated areas. At that point, all effects you apply on the composition, will be applied on the composition. And it becomes a lot easier to add more layers to the setup, plus you get more creative freedom because you can position additional layers freely in the comp.

Does that make a bit of sense?

Reading your post again, I think there also might be a chance your output needs to look like this: with left and right both having the Red and Blue layers, and Cyan on the left and Green on the Right.

The same principle applies. In this case you would create a composition twice as wide, and would have a layer with content positioned on the left, with a Slide effect applied at 99.99 opacity to put a copy of it on the right side.

Sorry I didn't include a representation of my setup!

3 physical screens but the side ones are actually the same output in Resolume. So I have the center screen output and one output for the side screens!

All of them are 800×600. I'll try creating a comp with your tips, if I understand everything correctly :? ! Thank you very much.

Yeah, in that case, you want the dual wide comp setup.

Remember to swap the rendering order of your transforms and effects if you want to use the Slide trick.
