Newbie Question - How to hide lower layer?

Been a long time since I played with Resolume as a part timer. I have a test up with 3 monitors. I am using the default stock footage with a brand new install of the Arena software. I have my main control monitor and 2 displays acting as the screens the customers will see. I have the monitors assigned to the slices I am working with in the advanced setup.
On the top layer, I have it assigned to screen 2, and on the layer under that, I have it assigned with slices to screen 1 and 2 so that layer's footage is spanned across both screens.
Both layers are set to 100% opacity.
When I activate footage on the top layer, it overlays the top layer clip on top of screen 2's clip on the lower layer as expected.
However, I then tried to use blending mode "cut" on the top layer thinking that it would cut out the clip playing on the lower layer on screen 2, while the screen 1 portion of that lower layer would continue to play, since only screen 2 was assigned on the top layer with CUT as the blend mode.
In actuality, no matter what blend mode I chose, the lower layer still shows underneath the top layer.
One of the clips I tested did actually completely hide the screen 2 lower layer clip when I played it on the top level, but all the rest just overlay it.
I am assuming because the clips I am playing perhaps are transparent in the areas where there is no content, that the lower layer shows through?
So simply put, how do I get the top layer clip, no matter what the content is to fully hide the lower layer when the top layer is active?
Thank you for any help in advance
