I had the same problem.
Solution that worked with my card:
First start the software program that you received with your pinnacle card and select tv composite or s-video in that program.
after that close the program and start resolume. resolume uses the input that you selected with the other program.

Has annyone already used the VMX VJ for resolume, and give some user experience?

I have an pcmcia video capture card for my laptop (AMD athlon64 3400+ 512 ram) and resolume is able to auto detect the card and to change some settings like brightness and color .
in my case there is a little delay in playback and the frame rate is verry low.
