VirtualDJ > Ableton Link > Resolume

Post by astroger »

Ableton link is working fine with VirtualDJ and Resolume. BPM well followed and stabile...
But how to get beatmatch??? Resync button is inactive :-(

I've tried before sync with MIDI clock. Resync worked but BPM is lost randomly...

I'm using a forced solution right now:
I set a VirtualDJ script in VDJartnet plugin. It send automatically TAP & RESYNC signals to Resolume. Also I made a DMX shortcut to TAP and RESYNC button in Resolume.
This is not a perfect solution but it works :-)

It would probably be much better to use the Ableton link (if resync button worked)

Any idea?

If you're using Ableton link, Resolume and Ableton will run at the same beat grid.
The Link protocol explicitly warns against hard setting the measure position like you'd like, with the re-sync, so we've also decided to honor that and disable re-sync while in Link.

If I use Link, Resolume and VirtualDJ run at same beat grid, but not in beatmatch. I would like resync only Resolume measure position of course!
I try to use BPM nudge in resolume, but VirtualDJ also nudge it (in sync) :-)
There is a possibility to resync in VirtualDJ but it's not a very realistic method.
It's more realistic that VJ follows the BPM and measure position of the DJ. ;-)

Resolume and Ableton are running at the same beat position with Link.
Maybe this is an issue with VirtualDJ?

Yes they are running at the same beat position until there is a "special" break or drop in the music... Then there is a phase shift in beat. Resolume does not give you the opportunity to correct it.

Quotes from here: https://resolume.com/support/en/link
"It's design is very much like an open jam session. Once it's running, everyone can join the Link session and control it."
"It will now automatically keep the BPM and the current position in the measure in sync between all connected computers."
How can I join the Link session in right position with resolume? How can I start a video loop (BPM sync) in right position? I tried a lot but didn't really succeed (Ableton & Resolume).
Any ideas or experiences?

With a drop, it's not the beatmark in Resolume going out of sync, it's the music going off the beat grid.
Try changing the Beat Snap resolution in Resolume to the drop length. eg from 1 bar to 1 beats.
Then if the tempo doesn't change, you can launch your clip in sync to any beat.

Thanks for the suggestion!
I try changing the Beat Snap to 1/4 bar. This allows to launch in any beat position. The video loop starts whenever I want :-)
Unfortunately, this method does not work with effect parameters for me. They restarted at timeline mode only :-(
This is a Resolume bug?
Here is my test video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UROc-pWhTC0

I still think resync button would be the best solution for my original suggestion. It would globally re-synchronize all currently running videos in layers and all effect parameters...

Effect parameters are synced to the composition beat grid.

As I said, changing the beat grid in Link is not a good practice, but you can take Resolume out of the Link any time, and have the Resync available.

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but is there any chance y'all might consider this behind an option?

This would simplify my life quite a bit when it comes to syncing Resolume with TouchDesigner as I would be able to use AbletonLink rather than having to do things manually by listening for BPM/Resync over OSC.

My usecase doesn't actually involve connecting with the performer, I just want to connect TD and Resolume.
