False FPS - Advanced Output - Multi Card

Post by kmifflin »

I feel that the fps meter in Arena is false. A typical show setup for me is 4 blended LX1500 projectors each set to 1024x768@60. The compostition setting is 4096x768 or less depending on the blend amount. The rig I use is i7 pc with 16GIGs of ram. I use a Quadro FX 4700x2 to drive the projectors and a Quadro FX 3700 to drive the FOH Control Monitor. It is important to note that the Quardo FX 4700x2 has 2 separate GPUs however the 4700x2 and the 3700 are all the same model GPU.

Now on my latest show I have a piece of content that counts to 23000 over 27000 frames, I know its not exact, but it plays perfectly and I can see the every number in the counter, however the fps meter show 12-15 fps. Even thought everything looks smooth. My biggest concern is sometime other clips chug and I feel I can't trust the fps meter.

Another thing I'm confued on with the fps is if I'm using arena with the advanced output configured to 4096x768 across four monitors. and have no clips playing the fps meter show 15-20 fps. With no clips playing I would have expected the meter to say 60fps

After switching Vertical sync to Force Off under the Manage 3d section of the nvidia control panel. The fps meter is far more accurate. With a 4096x768 composition running with no media loaded the fps metre hovers around 58.xx fps with the 5 layers of video I get 25-30fps. However as expected I do get some tearing content moving left to right. But overall it is a much better experience.
