Combining multiple Art-Net devices

Post by cormacokane »

Hi I want to use luminair on iPad to control regular PR cans(lumiverse 1) etc Philips hue lights and Resolume arena on PC to control tubes and strips(lumiverse 3 and 4)
I thought I could use one showjockey artnet device (the 4 lumiverse) and connect both the PC and luminair to it. I've been told there will be a protocol conflict and was surprised.
Has anybody else any recommendations on the best way to set this up?
And any example setups of using Resolume to control regular fixtures in a neat way?
Cheers cormac

You shouldn't have any issues as long as you set everything up correctly (IP addresses, Subnets and Universers) so can you be more specific about what you've been told?

As a note, Lumiverse is a Resolume thing so when you talk about Lumiverse, I'm assuming you're talking about DMX universes, right?

Philips Hue can be controlled from Luminair directly but doesn't use Artnet so there shoudln't be any conflicts with that either as long as you have a Hue bridge setup on the same network. As a head's up, Philips Hue can be sluggish so it might be hard to time effects with regular Artnet control.

If you set it up correctly, you could also use Luminair to control both lights on the DMX universe 1 on your Showjokey as well Resolume Arena. Just make sure you don't have conflicting DMX channels.

Last but not least, Redpark makes lightning ethernet cables with or without power so that you can connect your iPhone/iPad running Luminair with an ethernet cable instead of Wifi.

HI Oaktown . Thanks so much for the reply just saw it now.

I'm controlling my dmx par cans spots , washes etc on dmx output 1 of the showjockey box using luminair.
I also have my philips hue lights connected to Luminair.
I then have the led tubes connected to a lumiverse in Resolume and going out dmx 4 of the showjockey .

I am using showjockey's own wireless transmitter, receivers to connect the dmx par cans, washes etc.

I think the showjockey box can only have one subnet?

Does the ability to apply a different subnet address only apply if I want to use 2 different artnet devices on the same network?

I am unicasting both the luminair app on ipad and the resolume on pc to the same showjockey IP address, is this wrong?

I have tried to use luminair to control layers on resolume ( looking up the automap feature in resolume etc ) but have not managed to get it connected yet.

You mean wireless DMX (Tx & Rx units), right?

Not an expert but probably. One subnet gives you 16 universes (0-15) so that should be plenty. Why would you want a diffferent subnet?

Unless you use more than 16 universes, keep it simple.

No, unicasting will be fine unless you're trying to control devices on the same subnet/universe that are on different IP addresses in which case you should broadcast.

that's because you're unicasting to the Showjockey's IP address out of Luminair. To talk to both, you'd have to broadcast. Also since you're sending DMX values to dimmers, be careful using the automap feature in Resolume. You need to map your own DMX in Arena, or you'll have the DMX channels you're using to control your PARs' intensity, control parameters in Arena that you don't want to so best to start from scratch.
