Alley crashes when I load a video file.

Post by warpnote »

Alley will crash when I load any video file. I have tried both DXV and ProRes (and h264 too).
It has been like this for a few release versions now.

However, Resolume Arena seems to work fine. Also the DXV exporter in After Effects, Premiere and Media Encoder seems to be fine.

I suspect there is some issue Apple Quicktime on this computer...

Spec:
Resolume Version 7.17.3, Windows 10 Pro,
i7-7820X CPU @ 3.60GHz, GTX 1080 Ti (Desktop machine)

The machine is not running shows, mostly After Effects & Premiere work,
but I still would like to preview my DXV files on it...

Any advice would be helpful, thanks!

Looks like a faulty graphics filter / hook on your machine which crashes.
Do you have the latest OBS?
If not, which version do you have, and does the crash not happen any more if you update/uninstall OBS?

Thanks Zoltan, I will check that and report back.
The machine has both Streamlabs OBS and OBS Studio, installed in November 2020,
none of which I use any more, I will de-install asap.

Best Regards, Audun

Awesome,
I think this should be already fixed in a newer OBS version ;)

Curious how OBS would affect Alley?

Basically, apps can install permanent Vulkan layers, which are bacisally GPU render hooks, you can interact with.
https://vulkan.lunarg.com/doc/view/1.3. ... ation.html
Alley loads the renderer, which will have these applied, and then if it's buggy, it can cause issues.

Recent OBS version seem to work better, but there are some other apps we know of with buggy layers, could be a gaming overlay app you just installed, Playclaw is one, Fpsmon is another one.

Interesting and also very scary that other apps can directly affect other apps without the users knowledge like that. Thanks for the clarification <3

Ugh yeah this has been one of my main concerns for vulkan for a long long time...
OpenGL has the same issue though, ie nahimic and sonic suite preinstalled on msi/asus laptops crashing us too. Only there they actually need to intercept the driver and the api is way easier so less chance for them to screw us over. In vulkan it's an actual 'feature' making it way easier and thus way more apps actually doing it.
After annoying Khronos for two years they recently implemented something allowing us to ignore implicit layers. It still needs to be released but when they do we'll definitely use that ;)
