My wording was terrible, the spark unit is great, the TV-ONE unit is a finicky bitch.deepvisual wrote:trouble with the *spark?

But the TVOne....works...and works....and works
Instead of a second emergency notebook I'm using a "Cloudnetgo" HDMI Quad-Core Stick with Android.

The pocket VJ looks like a really cool piece of hardware. The price is a bit high for it. In the demo you can see that the two screens are usually about two frames off. The manual says its accurate to +/-6 frames. Ouch!

I really don't want to carry around another laptop to play content off, my flight bag is crammed and I need to travel light. That android device looks good, as does the pocketVJ. Looking at all the recommendations so far, I am thinking of getting a DVI Gefen KVM switcher and attaching it to my macbookpro and a back up mini display port to dvi cable attached to an ipad. Have any users here tried using an ipad as a back up (From what I hear the ipad V2 seems to work the best)?
Re: whats your back up system?
I first tried using a ipad3 with several adapters. Dock to hdmi and dock to vga....but....It onky seems to work stable with 10 cups of good carma and a lot magic....but each of them are not buyable on amazon (-:
So I choosed the Andoid stick!
When you buy a KVM switch...make shure each KVM inport gives you a EDID at any time otherwise you may have some trouble with reassigning video out ports of your main and backup system while switching.

I used a iPad mini with a the apple HDMI dongle and that works very well, it has a the HDMI and the new lighting connector charge port on the same dongle so you can plug it in while you using it. I am not sure about the new iPad retina, but the iPad mini will only go up to 720p not the full 1080p.newfuturenow wrote:I really don't want to carry around another laptop to play content off, my flight bag is crammed and I need to travel light. **Back up system in full effect**
Thanks folks, and big up to the cosmowe for discussing the need for an EDID watcher.
I found a neat little set up from Gefen, including a DVI switcher and a EDID detective box. I tested it prior to the gig with the led screen set up, it seemed to work ok, a very brief blue flash and then 1 or 2 sec delay as the switch over takes a hold, I could probably tweak this to work better, with more time to consider it fully.
Here it is on its first voyage public, hooked it up to my ipad via a display port to hdmi to dvi adapter..
I never needed to use it, but very assuring to know its there now.

And here it is looping a custom made clip in iphotos, video exported to fit the pixel mapping of the led screens. The only software I have available to do looping video on an apple ipad. Any alternatives you know for a better app to do this let me know! Ideal situation, would be for an app that lets my scale and adjust my video content in software to fit whatever, rather than having to compress independent clips like this.

And heres my set up last weekend in Amsterdam, wicked festival, banging crowd, great set..

Yes .... just a simple laptop with a backup system. Isn't it nice how good and simple it can be?
