Rookie Question: Artnet, Lumiverse, DMX, fixture activation

Post by @ai_accident »

Dear reader of this message, I am a super rookie in the world of Resolume (arena). I was hoping that this program would be the correct decision for the light control at my first gig in a few weeks. As I already have music videos following all my songs, I preliminary needs to control stroboscopes, LED fixtures and smoke machine via Lumiverse slash DMX, but I cant get any of this to work, not even the activation of a spotlight... .... despite me sitting for plus one week looking at all tutorials I could find.

Now, I just bought the Showtech NET 2/5 Artnet/DMX adapter and I have established the connection by setting up matching IP numbers and after some initial friction I can reach it ( I now successfully ping both the Showtech device and the ethernet - usb3.1 adaptor going out to the device from the laptop and here I have 2 different last digit adresses ). No worries here.

However, my problem is the basic plain understanding of how to really setup my very first simple LED light, like just a plain stage LED spot, not even a LED panel. So what I have done is to set a channel on the LED spotlight (here on the spotlight Cameo CLPFLAT1RGBWIRWH, I can choose a channel and I chose "001" (as I dont think I can choose an interval on the fixture) , I have found the fixture menu in resolume arena and added A LED fixture with 4 channels, rgbw (without really understanding what to choose) and then I opened the output advanced, specified the same IP as on the Showtech NET adaptor and then to tried to reach AND START my spotlight by also playing content recommended in tutorials (a moving line). I would easily pay any of you 20 euro for a 10 min video meeting resulting in me being successfull activating my first spotlight slash fixture. I dont have time sitting failing for more than these already lost days behind me as I need to prepare so so many things as my debut "Ai Accident" gig quickly is approaching (making projector masking movies in my beloved davinchi resolve and building full size mechanical robots from modified H&M mannequins just being a few things). Plese help!

Disclaimer: Is the fail due to that I am in the trial version of resolume ? If I managed to start my LED fixtures, my plan is to buy the full program directly.

Details: There is a red lamp under the fixture down to the right that is flashing. And also my attempted fixture setup entitled 1-4 JB test looks active when I run the moving lines (as it flashes) I added an attachment here if of interest.

It's a white only fixture.
I'd do L type fixture in Resolume and set the par to 1 channel mode.

Thx for the answer. Much appreciated. However, it is infact RGBW (before, I added the wrong title, now I have edited text). Since this post I think I have learned from a pro light technician that Resolume Arena is infact not at all a light software controller as (according to my friend), the dmx part simply outputs video colors or is he wrong. The control question he asked is how and where one is setting up a fixture for movement of a lasaer. In conclusion, he siad that Arena is "just a VJ software" with LED fixture capability, NOT a real light controller software as he cant find a fixture setup page with "decent controllers", most importantly movement of lasers, moving lights etc. Is he correct or not here? Maybe Resolume is not for me? Atleast not without any complementing lighting software. I have still not even managed to turn on a single spotlight....

Ok, use RGB Resolume fixture and the 3 channel mode then

Resolume indeed is designed towards video, but DMX control is just numbers.
You can make a simple DMX controller out of Resolume using greyscale controls mapped to L Fixtures to convert the brightness to a number.
Here is a Wire patch which can help: https://palffyzoltan.hu/?url=programs&a=dmxhelperwire

You can also combine Resolume with a lighting desk, and merging the color info you get from Resolume in the desk with the movement controls.

Thank you so much for the quick answer. I just solved my issues purchasing the Showbuddy software. Now, when my ”normal lighting programming and control easily can be controlled via dmx and the showbuddy vst plugin within ableton, I can look forward. Potentially, the Resolume avenue might be perfect for me in the live scenario controlling video and effects (as I already have made my masking in davinchi ressolve and now have a great dmx solution).

When I struggled with getting artnet/DMX output to work I eventually found out I needed to select the correct ethernet adapter in the Preferences > DMX menu. At the bottom you will see a drop down menu to select the network adapter. Make sure the correct one is selected and also try out the different targetIP options in advanced output, sometimes broadcast works but IP Address doesnt.. This should not make a difference but I found out it does..

But seeing as this post is from 2 years ago I'm curious if you got it to work eventually?
