Network Interface selection (for OSC, maybe NDI too)

Post by brandonL »

So I've been dealing with this issue every weekend for a year now, and I can't be the only one. I understand this is a niche issue more specific to resident VJs compared to tour VJs because they're not going to be using wifi at any point at the show anyways. However wifi is very important for me to have access to during club shows for last minute logos and that stuff.

Issue: I use TouchOSC on an iPad, and obviously I'm not going to use wifi for that, so I use a single usbc cable to network it to my Macbook, both support mDNS (hostname.local), easy stuff. The issue is that if wifi is turned on, or another ethernet adapter is hooked up, when you open Resolume it automatically "binds" to that adapter, and it is literally impossible to communicate to the iPad (thinking about it now, maybe I could set the club's wifi to manual, set my manual IP address with a subnet mask of 0.0.0.0?).

My temp fix: Turn laptop wifi off, turn ipad wifi off (pretty sure I don't need this step but I do it anyways), connect the two with the usbc cable, open Resolume, open OSC settings, make sure I see "IP ADDRESS: 0.0.0.0". Only then does TouchOSC work properly; I'm assuming that's because Resolume is set to 0.0.0.0 which is basically "ALL".

I think this whole convoluted setup process I have to do every single night at the club could be fixed with a simple dropdown in the OSC section that allows you to pick any of the detected network adapters, with an "ALL" 0.0.0.0 option as well. If I could change the default behavior, I'd be able to setup and plug things in without making sure things are done in a specific order.

This could even be extended to an NDI section and choosing which NIC uses NDI, or all. I setup a server at another club and sometimes NDI has issues because that computer has (and needs) two NICs for their particular setup.

Thanks for listening :)
