ArtNet Net Setting

Post by MNCreative »

Hi!

I'm using Resolume in a location with a lot of Pixel strips. I currently facing the issue of running into the limitations of Resolume's ArtNet config. It is only possible to set the subnet and universe, but not the net.

Usually it's net(0-128)/subnet(0-15)/universe(0-15) according to ArtNet specification. Unfortunately Resolume only supports Net 0, so I'm limited to 256 universes. This, at first glance seems a lot, but it's not when working with higher res pixel strips.
I'm wondering what the reason for this limitation of only one "net" is. The CPU is still bored even with well over 200 universes and 60fps. Even the NIC and network themselves have pretty low traffic as I unicast only.

I would really appreciate if Resolume could be unlocked to additionally set the net together with the subnet and universe. I use Advatek controllers and Enttec Octos before, they all support full ArtNet adressing up to 128*16*16 Universes.

Thanks!

PS: sACN support for input&output would be great as well, but let's start simple :)

The reason we dont support Net is quite simple, it didn't exist when we implemented a superset of ArtNet 2. We've never updated to ArtNet 4, so this setting is not there. Keep in mind that ArtNet unicasting doesn't require universe numbers to be unique. You can unicast a universe 1 to device A, and another universe 1 containing other data to device B.

I'm not saying when, but you can expect sACN sooner than ArtNet 4 ;) ;)
Would you still need ArtNet 4 if we've got sACN?

Hi!
Thanks for gettin' back.

Ah, that makes sense. Didn't know that it is still running on ArtNet2.

Good point! Didn't think of that. This might be a solution for me in the meantime.

I always decide project-based if I use sACN or ArtNet. So far, when Resolume was involved, I needed to use ArtNet (I don't like to mix protocols within one network). So in general I would prefer sACN for new setups - but for existing ones I have often used ArtNet. And I also don't think that ArtNet is obsolete when sACN is added to Resolume. So I would love to see ArtNet4 being implemented and therefore can use universes uniquely within a whole setup (even though there is now a solution to bridge the gap of the current missing Net-setting with the multiple use of universes).

If you have 5 pixel controllers on 5 IP addresses, you can send 5x256 unique Universes.

Yes thanks, that's what Menno mentioned above. Unfortunately I didn't think of that and adressed everything uniquely in this very project. Nevertheless I can think of changing all the configuration of course and then continue with the strategy of starting with universe 1 at every controller (while still unicasting of course). Most probably I will do this ultimately...
But the monk within me would prefer the ArtNet4 solution with the nets tbh...
Furthermore it would bring Resolume most up to date regarding ArtNet specification...
