Usb 3.0 external Drive
Usb 3.0 external Drive
Ok the faqs say don't use a usb 2.0 drive for the clips. But what about an external usb 3.0 drive or external ssd is this fast enough ?

Yochee tested different harddrives as well :
In the other results the Hard drive is mostly mentioned as wellyochee wrote:Model: ASUS K53SV (Mid2011 Laptop without USB3.0 or eSATA)
OS: Win7 Home Premium 64Bit
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT540M - 2048MB DDR3 RAM
Harddisk see below
CPU: Intel Core i5-2410M CPU @2.30GH
Memory: 8GB Ram
Resolume: 4.1.8
Output Setup: internal 1366x768 and external 1680x1050
(btw: i usually use a 2400x800 external setup)
-------------------------
Harddrive: external 1tb HDD 5400rpm (2") via USB2.0
480p:
clean 16
noise 4
1080p:
clean 4
noise 1
----------
Harddrive: external 300GB HDD 7200rpm via USB2.0 (Maxtor 6 V300F0)
480p:
clean 20
noise 5
1080p:
clean 5 (i can hear you)
noise 1
----------
Harddrive: external 500GB HDD 7200rpm via USB2.0 (TrekStor WD5000AAJB-00UHA)
480p:
clean 20
noise 5
1080p:
clean 5
noise 1
same with internal SD Card Reader & 3TB HDD
----------
Harddrive: internal 120GB SSD (Intel SSD SC2CT120A3 // SSD 330 series)
480p:
clean 20+
noise 20+
1080p
clean 5 (29,35fps)
noise 5 (28,63fps)
--> bottle neck with external USB2.0 harddrive @ 480p. performs best with internal SSD
--> almost no difference at 1080p with internal harddrive between clean & noisy clips (bottleneck GPU i guess)
--> interesting: with 6 clips 480p clean the framerate almost drops to 35fps, when starting another clips the fps get faster again. maybe then the GPU turns on?!
--> i usually use 800x600 clips or bigger. only a few old 480p clips have survived
--> not bad for a three year old 600€ consumer lappy
Laptop: XMG P507 // Intel i7-5500 / GTX-1060 / 1tb SSD / 32gb RAM // Lemur / BirdDog Studio NDI

Been using a custom build drives. Buy an m.2 board and an enclosure. Best performance and bang for buck.Pasha Malik wrote: Thu Aug 09, 2018 07:05 can any one suggest me which external drive should i buy. it must be credible.

Re: Usb 3.0 external Drive
USB3 tops out at 640MBps and sata SSD's hit around 550MBps, so you're 90MBps short of hitting your bottleneck.cvanhoose wrote: Fri Aug 10, 2018 21:06Been using a custom build drives. Grabbing a m.2 which has read speeds around 3,200MBps (About 32Gbps) is well over the 640MBps bottleneck. That's 2,560MBps that's un-used.
Thunderbolt 3 40Gbps (or 5,000MBps) would be the only external interface currently available to have a big enough tube to get 3,200MBps.
Here's what's wild!!! A Superior SSD, the M.2, is $140 CHEAPER than the slower sata SSD.... I'm still shaking my head in confusion on this.
And is only $50 more than a USB C external (same speed as the sata SSD)
For that price, going with the M.2 enclosure is the way to go! Especially if you want to future proof yourself. You can always transfer the M.2 from the USB3 enclosure to the Thunderbolt 3 enclosures down the road if you upgrade your computer.
Great suggestion cvanhoose

Another great option is to build mSata drives if you are on a budget.Arvol wrote: Sat Aug 11, 2018 00:04Great suggestion cvanhoosecvanhoose wrote: Fri Aug 10, 2018 21:06Been using a custom build drives.
