Timecode show for a band workflow and best practices

Post by vejas »

This is how I set up a show for a band, hope it could be useful and if anyone has something to add I am glad to hear (maybe I forgot something or maybe there is a more elegant way to do it)

Scenario

A band is playing live with base tracks from cubase

the videos are in sync played from resolume

The show consists of 21 tracks from the band. Each song starts at a distance of one hour, then the first 01:00:00:00, the second 02:00:00:00 and so on. Cubase can generate a timecode track but for convenience the tracks were generated by https://elteesee.pehrhovey.net the tracks will then be delayed by 2 seconds, so it will be placed under the beginning of the song at the precise time, so the first at 01:00:02:00 this is because so we have two seconds of pre roll. (the duration of the timecode depends from the tracks, but I usually set to 10 minuites and then shorten on cubase)
Why not a single track? Because is more granular with this approach and if I have issues is confined to a single track.

(In case you have many tracks decrease the interval to 30 minutes or less, the important thing is that the timecode is unique)
In cubase (or any other daw) a timecode track is added that is assigned to an audio output dedicated to you (which does not have to come out, otherwise you hear 400 screaming pigs. quote) this out will be connected to the in of your sound card

In resolume in the preferences select the sound card and the time code input on the corresponding channel. MAKE SURE THAT THE FRAME RATE IS UNIQUE IN ALL THE STEPS, IN EUROPE IT IS USUALLY 25FPS in the layer 1 load the logo of the event or band (as I recommend I also put it as a desktop background, because in the worst scenario at least something themed comes out) In layer two load the clips of the videos, which you will have edited in time with the music

BEFORE YOU START TO EDIT THEM MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE DEFINITIVE VERSION OF THE SONG

the first clip set in the transport smpte 1 (remember that the clip must not have audio otherwise this option does not appear) and as offset 01:00:00:00, the duplicate it in the next column and set the tranport on time lime play once and clear and relative

THIS IS FAIL SAFE MECANISM, ONCE YOU START THE TIME CODE CLIP, SWITCH TO THIS CLIP BECAUSE IF FOR ANY REASON THE TIME CODE DROPS, IT WILL NOT AFFECTED.

repeat for the rest of the clip.

If everything it set up correct if you enable the smpte from the view menu you should see the timecode values.

To play the clip at the correct time code time you always have to arm it, so before the show start you launch the clip 1 on layer 1 and arm the clip 1 on layer 2 and as soon it will finish you arm the clip 2

NO HAND MODE (just keeps your arms crossed and enjoy the show)
if you want to do the show without arming up the clips, the solution is to use chataigne https://benjamin.kuperberg.fr/chataigne/en

open the program and in the modules add soundcard and resolume (taking care to enable the osc in the program preferences) in the sound card in hardware settings checked that are right, practically that in input the channel of the card is selected from where you receive the timecode while in resolume that the ip is the same that is displayed in the program preferences and that the port is the same (default the 7000)

in machine state add a state and inside an action

from input value, cliccate su click to select - sound card ltc - ltc time

input value = 00:59:58:00 e consequences true click on the plus and select resolume - launch / stop - launch clip

select the layer (2) and the clip

then duplicate questo stato e nel delay delle consenqueces set to 01:00:02:00

In this way the two seconds of pre roll that enables the clip in question but just after two seconds it will change on the clip untied from the timecode that even if it were to jump or stop you will not be afflicted. repeat this procedure with the correct timecodes for how many tracks you have

In case there are problems checking that the osc messages are received by resolume via the internal checker, make sure that chataigne receives the timecode, you see the values change and when the value is the one set the inspector lights up green.

Take various tests and if all goes well, get chips and gin and tonic and enjoy the show.

Keep in mind that the manual command overrides any time code actions

Just in case keep a third layer with some fx so if a base it will looped or anything else you can always improvise

You can also a link a light desk, laser software with timecode show but here we are talking about Resolume :-D

This is base level for a simple show (if you have to create and edit a video with a soundtrack is not so simple) but its a start, of course if have a dj or want to have a more complex cue the next step is showkontrol.
