Multi GPU? (Again but different issue)

Post by dannysting »

I work at a venue that has 4 LED screens, projectors in the lobby, an LED TV in the Lobby, and two window screes. Since we often do corporate parties, people want different things going on on the different screens. We have a built-from-scratch computer that has a video card that supports 4 outputs. But as you can see, I'm 3 short. Although the mother board is equipped with multiple displays, I don't want to use any of those because I'm afraid the content will start lagging and the Resolume will crash.
My question is: can I use multiple GPUs? I'm thinking on getting the 2 EVGA GeForce GTX 970 ACX 2.0 FTW+ and do the whole SLI to connect them together. Would that work? (Of course, with other upgrades like on the power supply and such)
I saw in a recent post that Resolume could work with multiple GPUs but it wasn't meant to do so. I've looked over this and had found no answers.

Thank you in advance

Don't use SLI and you'll be good. Be warned that only one card will be actually handling all the processing. The other is basically a dumb output card.

Matching the cards is suggested. A pair of 970's should do you well.

Long as you have SSD's for content and stick with DXV you'll do fine.

Why not get a secound Computer and split the Signal in a good way, so you as well can only use one for all ( with splitters or other ways) as well use the second Computer only for a special area if needed.

Computer 1 : Hall & Lobby ( if wanted)
Computer 2 : Extra Lobby ( if needed)

There are Cheap 2-1 switchers i have in my mind for that kind of stuff ( Ligawo HDMI 2-1 )

Maybe a different way to solve the Problem and just a hint ;)

Thank you. I will upgrade the hard drives as well. It's good to know about the SLI.

A second computer would be great but I'm already doing lights and video at the venue and I think if I get a second one, besides building a new computer or buying a new one already made, it will be too much to handle.
One of the good things about the Resolume and the main reason why I got it was because I can switch the stuff that goes into each one of the screens with a click instead of getting a Matrix (Or multiple).
I like the idea of getting the switchers, though. But I will use those with my backup just in case the Resolume crashes and I can't get it up. For backup I have the Catalyst.
Thank you for your help and suggestions

Then it was my misstake, i thought it was just some static stuff on the 2cnd area like Logos flying around and no real stuff you need to work on through the night ;)

you know, you could control your resolume machines via Artnet/DMX.

OSC is also a great way to control multiple media servers in real time!

Dannysting, I look at your original email and it looks like Datapath gear would be a great solution for what you're doing.

I just designed and installed a system for a client that had 15 projectors off one DL-DVI output of a Gigabyte GV-N980G1 GAMING-4GD GPI with one Datapath dL8 and four Datapath X4 units. The output to the dL8 is 3840x2400 @ 30Hz and the comp is 15360x768 which is huge and almost equivalent to using HXGA (4096x3072) but we're still getting 30Fps!

Take a look at the Gigabyte card, it retails for about $580 but it's amazing. Rather than investing in a 2nd GPU you could add two Datapath X4 units and easily get 8 discreet outputs from your system using two 4K outputs. The X4 is bit pricey (~$1,300 for the desktop unit and $1,500 for the 1U version + tax) but they are so great and stable you'll wonder how you were able to do shows beforehand.

As a note, each output on the X4 can be set at a different resolution as digital (DVI or HDMI) or analog (using a DVI to VGA adapter) and be extended ~200ft.

I'm using a cheap MIDI controller (Behringer CMD DC-1 DJ Controller). I've been so busy lately that I haven't had time to setup the DMX. I just saw that it wasn't as simple as with the Catalyst. Or maybe I'm just too used to it, which is not good at all. I guess I need help on that. But that might be on another post

This sounds like a great idea. It is pricey, though. I spent around $900 for the two cards plus maybe $200 for a new power supply. They could be returned, though.
Now I have a lot of things to think about. Decisions, decisions...
But this information is pretty good. Thank you!
