Lag, linked the same clip many times

Post by donovan.vm »

Hi all!
Thanks for a great forum!
I'm quite on resolume and have been using it for the last months. It all has been working really good until recently when it started to lag a lot.
I guess it could be a lot of things but it just hit me that I have linked the same clip a couple of times. Is it possible that could make it more unstable?
Maybe it's better to duplicate the file in explorer?
Otherwise I have no idea what it could be.
Have a gig tomorrow and changing everything would take a lot of time so thought I could check here if anybody has any idea about it.

Thanks a lot!

You are playing back from ssd right?
If you have too many layers playing at once, a lot of effects( ex. delay rgb and blur are wery resource intensive), your framerate will drop, depending on your hardware.

Here is the benchmark topic where you can see what framerates are to expect with different hardware: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=11093

I don't think that having the same file in a lot of clips would cause lag, except when it is played back at once many times.

Great, thanks a lot!
Well actually I play the same clip at once a lot :)
I have ssd, one with windows and and one where a play my clips from.
The thing is that it has been working so well and suddenly it began lagging.
And now it can lag even with just 3-4 clips, with effects as well though.
Hm so hard to figure how to fix it.

background processes can lag up ssd-s, so it's best to switch off any virus scanners for example.

have a look on the running processes in task manager, you can switch on more columns with additional info like number of IO operations.
also look for processes that you don't recognize from the name.

switch on the fps display, and if it drops when you see the lag, it's most likely, the processing chain, resolume to pci bus to gpu, if fps stays then file reading issue could be the reason for the lag.

there is a tool in windows called msconfig.
it lets you disable startup applications.

To free up some bandwidth, you could use a layer router with a source layer to play the same clip with different configurations. Each router can its own set of parameters.

Oh great thanks a lot for your help!
I just realized the times i had most problem was when playing the longest clips and just saw they are 4-5 gb each... Since the quality parameter when exporting from premiere doesn't seem to effect the size how can I do that without changing resolution?

And also would it be best to have the clips on the same ssd as windows or doesn't it matter?

I would keep the media files away from the windows ssd.
(the best - fastest solution for files would be ramdrive, the next best is raided ssd-s)

As Oaktown mentioned the layer routers shift the processing load to the gpu, so sou can save bandwidth on the ssd.
Howewer you won't be able to play the clip at different positions with the layer router.

You could switch off the alpha channel in Codec preferences, if you don't need alpha.

Another trick is to convert your media clips to a DXV3 file. To give you a sense, here is a link to a folder with some media that i'm using for a show in both PNG and DXV3: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2Lh5 ... authuser=0
