Akai Apc 40: No Led-Feedback

Post by Mondmöwe »

Hi,
I need help with my Midi-Controller: Akai apc 40
Arena Resolume 7.21.3
MacbookPro M2 Max, 2021, Sonoma 14.6.1

I have an old Akai Apc 40 controller:, which I got from a friend. I can do the midi-mapping, knobs & buttons are working, but there is no light-feedback to the controller. So even if I press a button > the clip is playing, the button wont light up to show which clip is played
I checked in the preferences Midi Output is activated.
Is there an option to make this work? and if not is there an other controller that works smoother?

Thanks in advance

I already checked the internet & ChatGpt, haven’t found a solution yet.

Did you only activate the output channel or did you also map it?
If not here is a video that might help. It's for the APC40mk2 but the workflow should be the same.

In resolume you need to set the midi clock out, so it sends midi back to your APC40 Mll.
https://resolume.com/support/en/midi-shortcuts
If that does not do anything it is possible that there some resistor lose on the print board of you APC40.
That can easily happen, APC40 Mll are not shock proof. Had to get mein fixed after a slow drop of 50cm.

Hi thanks for your answers.

It’ an older Controller – not a MK2-
I couldn’t find the Midi Clock Out, Just Midi Input, Output & Clock in.
I mapped my Midi & it’s the third of those controllers I checked all of them have the same issue (they are working fine, besides the not working LED-Feedback).

Does the MK2 work without problems, and if I connect it does a Midi Clock show up in the preferences, if so. Maybe it’s time for me to get that one.

Thanks a lot

Midi Clock is not needed but you need to activate MIDI Input AND MIDI Output. In the video I posted at around 4:40 he tells how to set the light.

https://www.resolume.com/support/en/mid ... s#midi-out
For Clips the state names are different:
- Empty (when there is nothing on the Clip)
- Disconnect (there is a Clip but is not playing)
- Previewing (selected Clip is in Preview Mode)
- Connected (this is when the Clip is playing)
- Connected & previewing (both of the above)

Since I only have the mk2 I don't know for sure it's working on the original APC40 but I would definitely think so. So normally you should only have the option lights on/off maybe there are 127 velocity options available for brightness of the light.

In the MIDI settings, select the appropriate input and output for the appropriate controller, slightly below the output. You can also select the controller mode. Select the third one (mode 3 - alternative to Ableton Live mode).

Not all keys have two colors, so this may be confusing, but most executors have the option to select red, green, or orange, as well as flashing options.

During mapping, select red for "Connected," for example. Otherwise, the keys will only light green or off.

After connecting the APC, the controller starts in mode 1 - automatic mode. After starting, Resolume should send a sysexx message switching it to mode 3 (the LED that lights up on startup should go out).

Tested and working.

Sorry to bump in with not exactly the same issue, but on the APCmini mk1...
I've been emailing Akai regarding the "no-led" feedback for no reason, happened in the middle of a gig, and they tell me that the issue it's with Resolume and link me to this post.

I just wanted to share their exact answer, if it may help:
Thank you for getting in touch. My name is Seyi and I'm from the Technical Support Level II team here at inMusic.

First and foremost, I am very sorry to hear of the issues you’ve been experiencing. I understand how frustrating this must be. Please be rest assured that resolving this case for you is my top priority.

The APC mini mk1 is class-compliant (driver-less) and therefore is not affected by the recent MIDI update from Microsoft. The lack of LED support in Resolume is not caused by this.

Moving forward, it is very important to note that the APC mini mk1 (just like all the other APC controllers released by Akai Pro) is designed and programmed/mapped for 1:1 integration in Ableton.

This includes LED feedback support.

Although the APC may work with most 3rd party apps, unfortunately - 1:1 functionality cannot be guaranteed other 3rd party software may not have the relevant programming for full integration such as LED feedback.

As you've confirmed the LED's do work in its original environment - Ableton, this confirms there are no faults with it and it is functioning properly in its intended software environment. I can also see the APC is showing up correctly in device manager.

I also understand you've been able to utilize the LED's on the APC for 6 years without issue. At a tech support stand point, it would be difficult to understand what cause the sudden stop in LED feedback. But from previous cases - it is likely something within Resolume had recently changed.

As the APC mini mk1 is designed for Ableton and it now a much older/discontinued device - I'm afraid there are no further workarounds or fixes available. This set up includes a 3rd party software which falls outside of the scope of support we offer.

Instead, I could only advise reaching out to Resolume support for any information they may be able to offer regarding this recent change. I found THIS post discussing a similar topic which you might find helpful.
