Kraak & Smaak Competition Reward Raised to 1000 Euro

We received many submissions for the Kraak & Smaak VJ clip design competition but also some complaints that the 500 Euro reward to make 20 more clips was too low. So we decided to DOUBLE this to 1000 Euro!

This is the first time we're organising a competition so we're shooting from the hip and learning as we go. ;-)

So fire up After Effects, Cinema 4D, Motion, or even Processing and start making some amazing VJ loops, there is 1000 Euro waiting for you.

Checkout the contest page and entry form for all the details. We're looking forward to your submission before Monday April 26.

Here is another videoclip from Kraak & Smaak for some inspiration and your personal entertainment & relaxation.

Kraak & Smaak (meaning 'crunchy and tasty' in Dutch) are a producers trio from the Netherlands and are one of Holland's major dance music exports touring the world with their LIVE and DJ / VJ set-up. They have played at Festivals like Glastonbury, Bestival, Big Chill and Coachella and headlined super-clubs like Ministry of Sound. They have released two albums so far, 'Boogie Angst' and 'Plastic People'. The latter album included their biggest single to date, 'Squeeze Me'. You can check out the video for that track below.

Great news from the FreeFrame front!

Finally there seems to be a wave of creativity on the FreeFrame front. We were afraid that after the great success of FreeFrame classic (thanx Jaymis for the nomenclature), FFGL, the younger, quicker and better looking brother, didn't seem to be picked up by a lot of people.
We have been adding more and more plugins in every point release of version 3 we made in the last year, so at least people have a decent base to work with. Of course it would be nice if there were some more plugins to choose from.

In the last few weeks big steps have been taken to make it easier for developers to create plugins.
So here are the goodies, take what you like and let us know your experiences.

OpenFrameworks ofxFFGlPlugin add-on
Daniel Berio made an OpenFrameworks wrapper that converts your OF projects to FFGL plugins.
Use the versatile and developer friendly OF libraries to create plugins within minutes, Daniel's add-on is plug and play, an example for a source and effect plugin are included.

FFGL wrapper for FreeFrame classic from BigFug
A lot of people want to use their favorite FreeFrame plugins in version 3 of Resolume. With Alex May's (BigFug) FFGL wrapper now you can. So the all time popular plugins from Pete Warden http://www.petewarden.com/ can now be used in Avenue.

Check the vjforums post from Alex

and the CDM post

FFGL fugStream plugin from BigFug
This plugin enables you stream the output of a FFGL/FreeFrame classic host to another. Connect Resolume 2, Vjamm or vvvv to Resolume 3 or vice versa.

FFGL fugCompilerGL plugin
Alex has been busy, check out this cool plugin.
If you fancy creating your own FFGL plugin, but don't want to mess about with C compilers, then this one is for you.
fugCompilerGL allows you to create your own FFGL plugins by just writing vertex, fragment, and geometry shaders.

VJ & Projection Mapping Workshop on March 18, SAE Amsterdam

It's that time of year again! Resolume and SAE Institute Amsterdam are offering a free VJ workshop, this time on the art and science of projection mapping!

If you haven't heard of this phenomenon before, it's a relatively new form of visual art. Instead of projecting on a flat rectangular screen, you project your images on a specific surface, ranging from custom made objects, to whole life size buildings. For some cool videos of mapping in action check out these clips:

Augmented Sculpture

For the workshop we'll be showing you the different tools and techniques used in projection mapping. For software we'll be focussing on the latest version of Resolume Avenue, which has some powerful features built-in, for easily mapping a surface.

We often hear the term workshop being thrown around, when it's actually just a lecture, but this one is actually all about doing things. We have plenty of beamers and computers (but feel free to bring your own), and after a short introduction, it's going to be all you, baby! Making objects or mapping out surfaces, it's going to be you at the controls.

So sign up now by sending an email to vjcourse@sae.nl! It's free, so what have you got to lose?

New FreeFrameGL Effects: Cosmic Pack by IRworkshop

Ivan Ryaboff from IRworkshop has been busy programming a set of 3D FreeFrameGL effects. The pack is now done and released for Mac OS and Windows. IR Cosmic Pack consists of 6 3D effects that revolve around the theme of replicating video in 3D space. The plugins are free to try, 29.90 Euro to buy. A bargain. Highly recommended, if this fits your style. Have a look on the IRworkshop website for all the details.

BTW, Ivan is not only a great programmer and VJ, but a photographer too. Take a gander at his work on Flickr, it's amazing.

We're very happy to see more developers writing FFGL effects. We're working on a FreeFrame wrapper for openFrameworks which will make it even easier to compile plugins and leverage the power of OF ;-) and it's addons. We hope this will encourage even more FreeFrame development in this amazing community of creative programmers. It will be open sourced as soon as it's done and tested.

Resolume awarded 'Best VJ Software' in The Technofile Awards

Hurray! Resolume Avenue 3 has been awarded 'Best VJ Software' in The Technofile Awards 2010!
This is what the judges had to say about Resolume:

Resolume 2 must rank as the most popular and widely used piece of VJing software on the planet, but as its creators, Bart and Edwin, are the first to admit, it has its limitations. That’s why they’ve rebuilt it (they have the technology) from scratch, using a completely different programming language and taken it cross platform (yup, it now runs on Macs too!). The result is an almost completely new program that’s exponentially more powerful, yet just as simple to master. Offering GPU accelerated support for multiple layers of HD in real time, full AV control and support for VST plug ins, Resolume Avenue 3 is a quantum leap that will have VJs and AVJs everywhere salivating (and yes, I hereby claim copyright on the term ‘AVJ’!)

Other winners in the VJ category are the Pioneer DVJ-1000, Pioneer SVM-1000 Mixer. Checkout the whole article on thetechnofile.com
